McConnellsburg Blows Out Southern Huntington County

McConnellsburg 13, Southern Huntington County 0: The Spartans hosted the Southern Huntington County Rocket in a conference match September 28 and cruised to their ninth straight victory and third shutout

The Spartans scored four goals in the first half, with the first coming six minutes when Ethan Lange passed to Lincoln McKelvy for a kick in goal at the 6-yard line. The second goal in the 10th minute was attributed to Hoyt Glenn header on a left to right cross from Noah Jefferson. In the 14th minute McKelvey connected with a goal from a cross pass from Lange.  Less than three minutes later Glenn connected for the fourth goal on a pass from McKelvy.

The Spartans amped it up in the second half scoring nine goals.  In the fourth minute, McKelvy scored the fifth goal on a pass from Glenn. Under two minutes later, Callen Mellott scored on an assist from Glenn. Five minutes later Mellott again connected on goal from 12 yards via a McKelvy pass.  Under two minutes later a repeat, Mellott from the 12-yard line via McKelvy to make it 8-0.  In the 18th minute, Glenn scored goal nine on a pass from McKelvy; this goal tied the all-time school record.  Under three minutes later, Mellott scored goal 10 with an assist from Jace Fletcher. At the 21st minute, Glenn scored goal 11 on a pass from McKelvy.  This goal broke the school record and erupted in fan jubilation. In the 24th minute, Glenn fed Mellott to scored from 18 yards for goal 12. The final 13th goal came from Grady Shives unassisted.

Totals — MHS: 13 goals, 55 shots, 38 shots on goal, 11 corners, 10 assists, 2 goalkeeper saves, 3 fouls, and 5 free kicks. SHC: 0 goals, 6 shots, 2 shots on goal, 1 corner, 24 goalkeeper saves, 5 fouls, and 3 free kicks.

Hoyt Glenn scored four goals and surpassed the previous all-time soccer goal record holder Dalton DeShong. After the game, he was presented the game ball to achieve 125 goals.

The Spartans (9-0, 4-0 ICC-E) will visit Everett for a cross-conference matchup on October 1 at 5 p.m.

McConnellsburg Defeats Berlin Brothersvalley

GIRLS SOCCER

McConnellsburg 2, Berlin Brothersvalley 0. The Lady Spartans earned a hard-fought conference win over the Berlin Brothersvalley Lady Mountaineers on September 29, extending their winning streak to 10 games. The victory marked their ninth shutout of the season and sixth in a row.

McConnellsburg opened the scoring in the first half when Baylee Maloff converted a loose ball after the goalkeeper mishandled Marin DeShong’s shot off the goal post. In the second half, Laynee Hendershot scored from just inside the 18-yard line when her shot glanced off a defender and into the right-side netting.

The Lady Spartans have outscored opponents 67-2 this season, averaging 5-0 at home and 7.8-0.3 on the road. Gemma Gordon leads the team with 23 goals, followed by DeShong with 16. McConnellsburg averages 32 shots on goal and 52 total shots per game.

The Spartans (10-0, 6-0 ICC-S) will visit Everett for a cross-conference match at 7 p.m. on October 1.

McConnellsburg Shuts Out Tussey Mountain

GIRLS SOCCER

McConnellsburg 8, Tussey Mountain 0. The Lady Spartans defeated the visiting Tussey Mountain Lady Titans in non-conference play on September 28, extending their winning streak to nine games. The victory marked McConnellsburg’s eighth shutout of the season and fifth in a row.

McConnellsburg scored five first-half goals. Six minutes into the match, Gemma Gordon converted a penalty kick after a Titans foul on Marin DeShong. Four minutes later, DeShong scored from a Genesis Clevenger cross. In the 16th minute, DeShong finished a sweeping corner kick from Molly McKelvy for the third goal. With less than seven minutes remaining, Baylee Maloff’s shot was mishandled, and Gordon collected the ball at the goal line to score. With under four minutes left, DeShong took a pass from Katelynne Shives, dribbled past three defenders, and struck a left-footed shot from 18 yards into the back-left corner over the keeper’s outstretched arms.

Six minutes into the second half, Gordon scored unassisted for McConnellsburg’s sixth goal. In the 14th minute, a Titans tripping foul led to a free kick from the left side, which McKelvey placed for DeShong to finish. In the 21st minute, Kya Washabaugh scored from 18 yards to complete the scoring. The bench gained valuable playing time and shooting experience, while the defense preserved the shutout.

Gordon and DeShong each recorded a hat trick. DeShong led the team with four goals and 17 shots and tied Gordon with eight shots on goal.

Totals: MHS — 8 goals, 52 shots, 29 shots on goal, 6 corners, 4 goalkeeper saves, 5 fouls, 1 penalty-kick attempt and conversion, and 7 free kicks. TM — 0 goals, 4 shots, 3 shots on goal, 0 corners, 23 goalkeeper saves, 8 fouls, and 5 free kicks.

The program also recognized seniors Gemma Gordon, Claire Bloomer, Sydney Buterbaugh, and Brookelynn Gelvin, some of whom have played for as many as 14 years. Spartan Nation thanks them for their dedication to the program and their contributions to years of winning seasons and championships.
