Chbg. roundup: Girls tennis fights to earn win over Colts

Chambersburg 4, Cedar Cliff 1: The Trojans dominated three of the five matches and won one of the two close ones to post a non-league victory over the Colts in Highland Park on Thursday afternoon.

The No. 1 singles player for Chambersburg (8-5), Leah Wadel, pulled out a tight one against Kiera Goodling, who won the first set 6-2. But Wadel tied it with a 6-3 win in the second and won in a tiebreaker.

Olivia Keller then earned a conclusive 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. At No. 2, the Trojans’ Aria Barberio dropped a close one, 6-2, 7-5, to Paige Wehnert.

Both doubles matches went Chambersburg’s way. Gretta Hill and Nina Kuchar posrted a 6-0, 6-2 win, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory by Kendall Temchack and Sophie Keller.

Trojan coach Nico Mucci said, “We’ve had a lot of close, heartbreaking losses this year, so it’s really good to see how this group bounces back. We even saw it in Leah’s match today — lost the first set, but was able to let go of that, regroup, and get the win. I’m excited to see what they can do to end the season.”

Chambersburg 1, Carlisle 1: The Trojans and Thundering Herd battled to a Mid Penn Commonwealth draw on Thursday afternoon in Carlisle.

Deklin Shank scored the goal for Chambersburg (4-5-1, 1-4-1 MPC) early in the second half.

“It was a very even game in the first half, and both teams had few chances,” Trojan coach Marc Furfaro said. “In the second half, we came out flying and got a quick goal. But we got a red card with about 15 minutes left and they scored around the 72nd minute.”

Chambersburg fired off 11 shots and Trojan goalkeeper Brayden Shoop made 6 saves.

Carlisle 2, Chambersburg 0: The Trojans could not overcome a 2-0 lead by the Thundering Herd and dropped a Mid Penn Commonwealth tilt at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night.

Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said, “After a strong first 10 minutes, we gave up two soft goals in the latter part of the first half. We fought back, but even though we kept Carlisle at 2, we couldn’t find a goal. That’s two games in a row with scoreless second halves.”

The Trojans (3-7, 1-6 MPC) have scored only 6 goals in 10 games and have been shut out in 6 games.
