The Trojans then waited until the fifth inning of the second game to get on the board, but earned a 5-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on Friday afternoon on the road.

Chambersburg is 15-3 and finished 12-2 in the Commonwealth, one game behind Central Dauphin. The Trojans currently hold the Class 6A No. 2 spot in the District 3 rankings behind the Rams.

The first game started with Chambersburg holding a 6-0 lead. Issie Slimmer had pitched the first 4 innings and gave up only 2 hits last week. Sanay Jones pitched the last 3 on Friday, giving up just 1 hit and fanning 4.

Addy Gsell paced the offense, going 3-for-4, scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 runs. Gsell and Kendall Flory each hit a double.

“Sanay shut the door and really gave them no hope,” Trojan coach Chris Skultety said. “And congrats to Addy Gsell, who got her 100th career RBI.”

In the second game, Slimmer went the distance, firing a 3-hit shutout with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.

Skultety said, “The second game was frustrating at times; we were not able to get any runs until the fifth, leaving a lot of runners on with less than two outs. But the crazy thing is, the way Issie was throwing, we never felt threatened — she simply shut the door. It was the best she has hit her spots all year, with an unhittable curve today.”

Still scoreless in the fifth, Kylee Perry led off with a walk and one out later, Gsell launched a 2-run home to center. Hensley Brookens later doubled in a run to make it 3-0. The 2-run sixth featured doubles from Perry and Marley Onomastico.

Chambersburg 8, Mechanicsburg 5: The Trojans came back to win the second game of a doubleheader against the Wildcats, but a defeat in the first game, which had been suspended last month with Mechanicsburg holding a 6-3 lead, cost Chambersburg a shot at the Commonwealth championship.

The Trojans finished the regular season with a 14-6 record and 9-5 in the Commonwealth. Mifflin County beat Central Dauphin on Friday to win the division with a 10-4 mark. Chambersburg will qualify for the District 3 playoffs and play a first-round game, likely at home, next Friday.

Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, “I’m proud of how the guys played. We came up just short of our first goal, but now we’re looking forward to next week.”

In the opener, the Trojans got to within a 6-4 deficit in the fifth, but Mechanicsburg (11-7) got a 3-run home run from Grady Weaver to break the game open. Brady Truett and Bryce Deneen each had a pair of hits for the Trojans.

Ryne Mills ran his pitching record to 7-0 in the second game, but needed help. The Wildcats tied it 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth on Gabe Magaro’s 2-run shot, but Chambersburg came right back to score 3 in the top of the seventh and Mills got the final out on his last batter, getting 3 straight ground-ball outs to end the game.

“The second game was a gutsy win for us,” Folmar said. “We traded the lead back-and-forth. They got to Mills a little bit today, but he competed his butt off and was able to finish the game.”

In the seventh-inning rally, two errors and a walk to Deneen loaded the bases. A wild pitch plated a run and the second run scored on another error. A base hit by Mills brought in the final run.

Mills was 3-for-4 and Brady Truett and Brycen Murray each had a pair of hits and, Truett had 2 runs batted in.
