G-A roundup: Softball team clinches championship in Colonial

SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 4, Northern York 3: The Blue Devils scored a pair of runs — with plenty of help from the Polar Bears — in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good and capture a Mid Penn Colonial win in Dillsburg on Friday, finishing a suspended game from last week.

The victory gives Greencastle (16-2) a 12-2 record in the division, and Big Spring is also 12-2. G-A coach Mark DeCarli said, “I think you’d have to say we’re the champions since we beat Big Spring both times we played them.”

The Polar Bears (12-6, 9-5 MPC) scored in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Blue Devils got 2 in the sixth. Minnie Gambacurta walked and Allison Logsdon bunted to third base. An overthrow at first base and an error by the rightfielder allowed Gambacurta to score and Logsdon to reach third base. She then scored on a passed ball.

The game had been suspended for rain last week, and picked back up in the top of the third, with Greencastle starting with the bases loaded and one out, with Northern leading 2-1. But G-A failed to score.

“That was pretty tough to start the game like that,” DeCarli said.

Erika Hoover hit a 2-out RBI single in the fifth to tie the game 2-2 before the Polar Bears took their 3-2 advantage.

Gambacurta had singled in a run last week. Greencastle managed only 4 hits.

Katie Zawilinski pitched the first 5 innings for G-A, allowing all 3 runs. In the sixth, the first 2 Northern batters reached base and DeCarli brought in Kiersten Swain to relieve and she finished the game with 6 straight outs, including 3 Ks.

“For us to start the division with an 0-2 record, and then win the next 12, that’s a heck of a season,” DeCarli said. “We’re going to try to make another run (in the postseason).

Greencastle plays in a Mid Penn Conference tournament semifinal game on Wednesday at Central Dauphin, with the opponent TBA.
