CHAMBERSBURG — Franklin County did itself proud Saturday when the Mid Penn Conference track & field championships came to Trojan Stadium.
Three local relay teams finished first (Greencastle-Antrim boys 4×100, Chambersburg girls 4×100, Trojan girls 4×400), Chambersburg’s Okenie McLaughlin won the boys long and triple jumps, and three other individuals also placed first — James Buchanan’s Cheyenne Eby (girls 400), the Trojans’ Julian Clark (boys 3200), and Shippensburg’s Ayden Foust (boys discus) earned gold medals by winning their events.
Area athletes also scored six runner-up finishes and 10 third-place finishes as they prepped for the District 3 Championships next weekend at Shippensburg University.
Chambersburg’s girls won two relays and took third in the other.
“I was very impressed with all three of our relay teams,” Trojan coach Chris Monheim said. “Two of them won and the 4×800 relay dropped almost 30 seconds from their previous best. All three relays should be major factors at districts.”
The 4×100 team of Natalie Anderson, Dechea Davis, Bree Paetow and Addy Brubaker burned their way to a time of 49.52, beating Palmyra to the tape by more than a second.
The 4×400 got a tremendous start by Brubaker, whose 59.3 was far better than any other runner in the event. Olivia Coy was next, then Paetow and Maggie Holtry both went under 1:00 and the team won by 2.75 seconds over Carlisle.
In the 4×800, Lily Spohn, Ellie Rife, Payton Loraw and Natalie Quinn hit a time of 9:45.99.
The other relay winner was Greencastle in the boys 4×100. Jerry Amstutz, Logan Andou, Cort Bradley and Spencer Long ripped off a time of 42.89 to defeat East Pennsboro by 0:37. Long also took third place in the 100 (11.02) and 200 (22.29) races.
McLaughlin kept up his domination of the jumps. He won the long jump with a leap of 23-0 and captured the triple jump with an effort of 46-11.5.
Trojan boys coach Jim Boyer said, “Okenie’s season-best jumps showcased his postseason abilities. He stepped up to have really big jumps in the finals of both events on his fifth jump.”
In the 3200, Chambersburg’s Clark posted a time of 9:30.38, pushing at the end to defeat Shippensburg’s Rylan Asper, who was second in 9:30.99.
The other boys winner was Foust of Ship, who gained the gold medal with a heave of 163-2 to win the discus. That came after he took second in the shot put with a distance of 52-1.25.
Eby, a James Buchanan sophomore, got warmed up by taking third in the 100 race in 12.46, and then beat the field in the 400, posting a 59.26 to hold off Harrisburg’s Imani Hopper (59.52).
In addition to Foust, other runners-ups included Jon Dawe of Chambersburg in the 300 hurdles (40.07), Noah Parks of Greencastle in the 800 (1:55.03), JB’s Colton Yeager in the 400 (49.50) and Waynesboro’s Brianna McIlquham of Waynesboro in the 300 hurdles (46.80).
Girls performers who produced third-place efforts, in addition to the Chambersburg relay and Eby, were Addie Zimmerman of Chambersburg (16-8.5, long jump); Alyssa Fowler of Greencastle (pole vault, 10-7) and Ainsley Green of JB (shot put, 34-4).
The Trojans’ Daniel Souza-Casagrandi placed third in the boys 400 in 49.74, teammate Alex Cross was third in the long jump (21-4) and G-A’s Andou took third in the 300 hurdles (40.35).
Boyer said, “Clark pulled away in the 3200 in the final 100 yards. Both Dawe and Casagrandi ran really strong and led their events until the last 50 yards or so.”
“I was impressed with Lily Spohn today,” Monheim said. “She dropped a ton of time in the 800 (5th, in 2:21.76) and posted one of our best-ever freshman times. The field events highlights were Zimmerman in the long jump and Serafina Richards (4th, discus in 116-2).”
