McConnellsburg Surges Past Forbes Road with Big First Inning

McConnellsburg 16, Forbes Road 1.  The Spartans scored 11 runs in the first inning, which helped them defeat the Forbes Road Cardinals 16-1 in a home conference game, shortened to four innings, on April 28. Shaffer Earley singled, scoring one run; Kaden Marpoe doubled, scoring one run; Vinny Badalamenti singled, scoring two runs; an error scored two runs; Jace Fletcher singled, scoring one run; Reese Alexander hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run; Earley homered to left field, scoring two runs; and Marpoe hit a solo home run to center field.

Forbes Road got on board in the first inning after Jacoby Knepper singled, scoring one run.

The Spartans extended their lead in the second inning after Fletcher doubled to center field, and Hoyt Glenn singled down the right field line, each scoring one run.  In the bottom of the third inning, Alexander grounded out, and Badalamenti singled to center field, each scoring one run.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, pinch hitter Cole Fletcher singled to center field, scoring the winning run.

Finn Kuhn (5-1) earned the win for the Spartans (10-2, 3-1 ICC-S).  The sophomore starter allowed five hits and one run over two innings, striking out three and walking none.  Sophomore Kason Harrell pitched two innings of shutout ball in relief and surrendered zero hits, striking out two and walking none.

Silas Hollibaugh took the loss for Forbes Road. The right-handed starter went two-thirds of an inning, allowing 11 runs (six earned) on nine hits, striking out none and walking one. Michael Strait pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief, yielding five runs (three earned) on four hits, striking out two and walking two.

The Spartans collected 13 hits in the game. Marpoe, Glenn, Badalamenti, Fletcher, and Earley each collected two. Badalamenti and Earley each drove in three runs.  The Spartans tallied four stolen bases. The defense played error-free ball.

B. Burton, Sawyer Hollibaugh, Knepper, Silas Hollibaugh, and Strait each collected one hit for the Cardinals. Knepper went 1-for-2 and had the lone RBI. Forbes Road turned one double play.

Next, McConnellsburg play at home on Thursday against Everett in a conference game at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

McConnellsburg 12, Forbes Road 2.  The Lady Spartans hosted the Forbes Road Lady Cardinals for a conference game on April 28, scoring in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings to victory in a shortened game, improving their record to 5-7 (3-3 ICC-S). The Cardinals scored first with two runs in the first inning.  The Spartans added three at the bottom of the frame.  The Cardinals were scoreless thereafter as the Spartans added one run in the second, four runs in the fourth, and four runs in the fifth inning.

Next, the Lady Spartans host Mercersburg Academy for a non-league game on April 30 at 4:30 p.m.
