SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 6, Waynesboro 1: Kiersten Swain fired a 4-hitter and Minnie Gambacurta drove in 4 runs to lift the Blue Devils over the Maidens in a Mid Penn Colonial game Monday afternoon on the road.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth, but Greencastle (12-2, 9-2 MPC) put together a trio of 2-run innings the rest of the way. Waynesboro’s Emma Bradley gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in the first 3 innings before G-A could chase home a run.
In the fourth, Greencastle scratched out 2 runs on singles by Lydia Pryke and Allison Logsdon, a fielder’s choice that put them on second and third, and they scored on an error and wild pitch.
After Rylee Miller slugged a home run for the Maidens (2-11, 2-8 MPC), the Blue Devils got 2 more in the fifth. An error, a walk to Erika Hoover and a single by Pryke loaded the bases and Gambacurta doubled to center to bring in 2 runs.
In the seventh, Kylie Kerns and Hoover walked, both moved up on a wild pitch and Gambacurta smacked a single for 2 more RBIs.
Swain (5-2) walked one and struck out 5. The bottom 3 batters in the lineup (Pryke, Gambacurta and Logsdon) were 6-for-12 with 2 hits each.
BASEBALL
Waynesboro 4, Greencastle-Antrim 1: John Kahl limited the Blue Devils to one run on 5 hits and no walks to lead the Indians to a Mid Penn Colonial victory on Monday in Greencastle.
Kahl, who struck out 5, gave up his only run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and earned the win thanks to a grand slam by Ryan Jenkins in the third inning.
“Kahl was just very good and efficient,” G-A coach Eric Shaner said. “I would have liked to see us work a few more at-bats — I think he got four first-pitch outs. That can’t happen.”
Avery Horst (5-1) pitched 6 innings for the Blue Devils (13-2, 9-2 MPC) and allowed 6 hits and a walk. In the third, with one out, Elijah Miller was hit by a pitch, then singles by Riley Eaton and Jack Knepper loaded the bases, and Jenkins cleared them with a shot to left for a 4-0 lead.
Shaner said, “Avery threw the ball well. The biggest difference was that they were able to get most of their action going in the same inning and then got the big swing from Jenkins. Our hits were spread out and most came late in innings. We battled to the end.”
In the seventh, Greencastle scored on a leadoff double by Horst and a two-out double by Noah Shifflett.
Waynesboro (10-4, 8-2 MPC) is now tied in the loss column for first place in the Coloial with the Blue Devils.
