COLONIAL PARK — You’ve heard that phrase that “It’s hard to beat a good team three times,” right?
Unfortunately, that very scenario happened to the Chambersburg girls soccer team on Saturday.
The Trojans had handed 2-1 and 1-0 losses to Central Dauphin during the regular season. However, the Rams were seeded higher than Chambersburg in the District 3 Class 4A playoffs and that home-field advantage may have been at least a small factor in CD’s 2-1 win over Chambersburg in the 2nd overtime on Saturday.
Cameron Ofak’s breakaway goal 5 minutes into the second OT broke a 1-1 tie and moved the No. 11 Rams (12-7) into Tuesday’s semifinals against No. 2 Manheim Township (16-2), a 1-0 winner over Central York.
The Trojans, who finished 10-7-1, were in a scoreless halftime tie, then gave up a goal by Maddie Long on a corner kick about 15 minutes into the second half.
“It was kind of a soft goal, maybe the second or third ball,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “We defended really well in open play, but not as well on corners.”
Chambersburg, however, got that goal back with about 10 minutes remaining. Kadence Decker retrieved the ball on the right side, then drove almost to the goal line. Her hard shot was touched by the Rams goalkeeper, but the ball sailed over her head and into the net.
Unruh said, “She hit a laser with really no angle at all, but was able to put it in.”
In the second overtime, the Trojans earned a corner kick. But the corner was defended by CD and the ball was cleared to Ofak, who turned upfield, beat her marker, and was able to slot the ball into the goal.
“Both teams only had about three shots on goal,” Unruh said. “It probably wasn’t our best performance of the season, but we showed a lot of scrap to come back and tie it.
“It’s been a great season; I just didn’t want it to be over, and the girls feel the same way. This is a really fine group of kids and I enjoyed coaching them.”
