Chambersburg boys qualify for states in X-C

NEWVILLE — The District 3 Cross Country Championships were held at Big Spring H.S. on Saturday and a pair of area teams qualified as a team for the PIAA Championships — Chambersburg’s boys in Class 3A and Shalom Christian’s boys in Class 1A.

The Trojans scored 248 points to finish 48 points ahead of Hershey for the fifth and final spot in states.

Aiden Alleman

“I feel like we’ve been waiting all season for the team to really come together and race like a unit, having (at the least) consistent and breakthrough performances,” Chambersburg coach Jim Boyer said.

The Trojans’ Julian Clark finished in 15:44.0 over the 5,000-meter course to snag third place. Cedar Crest’s Travis Furmanski won in 15:23.9.

Also for Chambersburg, Aiden Alleman took 16th place in 16:07.4, Boston Vincenti was 54th in 16:49.0, Cole Lehman was 66th in 17>01.9 and Tobias Willson placed 149th in 17:47.9.

Boyer said, “Clark was 33 seconds faster this year and Alleman ran a season-best by 38 seconds. Vincenti was within a second of his best time and Lehman just beat his best time.

“I’m thrilled that they made it happen when it mattered most to qualify again as a team.”

Also in 3A boys, Shippensburg’s Rylan Asper ran a strong race to take 4th in 15:47.0. Devin Barger was the top runner for Waynesboro (88th, 17:15.6) and Logan Bohrer of Greencastle-Antrim was 95th in 17:18.6.

Shalom scored 70 points to finish second in 1A behind Lancaster Catholic, which had 40.

For the Flames, Shay Kane was 8th in 17:28.4, his teammate William Davis was right behind in 9th (17:29.2) and Logan Cordell was 15th in 18:13.0.

In Class 2A, James Buchanan’s Isaac Diehl placed 23rd in 17:08.9 and Johnnie Martin was 91st in 18:46.5.

The Chambersburg girls suffered a cruel fate, missing out on a PIAA berth by a mere 2 points. The Trojans scored 255 points, while Carlisle had 253.

Brook Boone

“Missing out on the final qualifying spot by the slimmest of margins hurts pretty bad, but it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort,” Trojan coach Chris Monheim said.

Natalie Quinn raced to a 16th-place finish for Chambersburg in a time of 18:57.6, and Brook Boone also secured a spot as an individual in the PIAA meet by finishing in 30th place in 19:33.8.

Monheim said, “I’m very excited for Natalie, who is our newest district medalist, and it was great to see her get under 19 minutes. Brook had the best race of her career to grab a state qualifying spot, which is a very nice accomplishment. Five of our seven girls had lifetime bests.”

Also for the Trojans, Lillian Spohn was 56th (20:18.9), Kaylie Savage was 85th (20:45.9) and Arrabella Rife took 96th (21:00.9).

Waynesboro’s top finisher was Morgan Jones (75th, 20:33.2), Greencastle’s Avery Russell took 82nd (20:42.9) and River Burrow was Shippensburg’s first runner in 123rd (21:35.7).

In Class 2A, JB’s Sarah Oakman was 51st in 22:35.9, while Rocket teammate Graceyn Diehl ran 23:02.5 for 62nd place.

In 1A, Shalom Christian had 3 girls in the top 35 — Regan Kearn in 2th (23:13.5), Eliana Rice in 34th (24:54.2) and Savannah Miles in 39th (25:18.6).
