Trojan boys soccer claims berth in PIAA tournament

LANCASTER — Chambersburg’s boys soccer team knew it needed to have a stellar game on defense to get past Conestoga Valley.

Tyson Shanholtz

And the Trojans did exactly that, securing a shutout in a 1-0 victory over the No. 2 seed Buckskins on Saturday in a District 3 Class 4A quarterfinal game in Lancaster.

No. 10 Chambersburg (11-3-4) will play at No. 3 Central York (15-4-1) in the semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. All four semifinalists have qualified for the PIAA Tournament. Central York edged Hempfield on Saturday, 1-1 (5-4 PKs). Conestoga Valley finished with a 14-4 record.

“I worked with the back line in practice yesterday, and I told them that they are why we’ve gotten to this point,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “And, that we needed that play to continue.”

Goalkeeper Tyson Shanholtz earned his 10th shutout of the season — a program record — making 10 saves. And defenders Adan Barrientos (“He played fantastic again,” Grove said), Will Smith, Adrian Olvera, Noah Brena and Anton Winter shored up the defense, too.

Grove said, “Shanholtz made a big-time save with about 12 minutes left when he got caught out of position, but retreated quickly and made the save. And he had some other good saves, too.”

Theo Deinboeck

The Trojans’ goal came with just over two minutes left before halftime.

Theo Deinboeck won a ball inside midfield, and passed it over to Winter, who was advancing from his left-side position. He gained control and launched a shot from just outside the 18 and sent it into the net.

“You can see by the stats (CV led in shots, 15-4), that they are a very good team,” Grove said. “We knew they had five good players up front that they rotated in, so we had to buckle down on defense, and needed to defend 1 v 1 well. It was a little sloppy, but what’s saying about defense wins championships?”

The Trojans lost key midfielder Edwin Ramirez with an injury during the game, which caused some adjustments to be made.

Grove said, “We had some moments with possession and we did create some counter attacks, but Conestoga Valley was good. It was a hard-fought, physical game and we grinded it out. But, with our league, we had a lot of close games this year, and that helped.

“We were 5-10-1 last year and the guys on that team remember how it felt. They really wanted to do something this year.”

Chambersburg last qualified for the PIAA tournament in 2022.
