GIRLS SOCCER
Chambersburg 4, State College 2: Katy Weller had a hand in each goal as the Trojans doubled up the Little Lions in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Tuesday evening in State College.
Chambersburg (9-5-1 (7-4-1 MPC) also may have clinched a berth in the District 3 Class 4A playoffs. The Trojans were ranked No. 14 before the win (top 16 qualify), and will play at East Pennsboro on Wednesday in their final game of the regular season.
On a first-half corner kick, Weller’s cross was touched by Bree Paetow, and then Mady Koons kicked the ball into the net. Later, another Weller corner kick was turned into a goal when Koons headed it into the net.
Early in the second half, Weller carried the ball upfield and was taken down in the box. She then converted the ensuing penalty kick. With 10 minutes left, up 3-1, Weller hit a free kick to the far post and Paetow headed the ball home.
Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said, “The girls played with a real composure, and we were able to get a lot of squad rotation in. I was thrilled with our purposeful possession and clinical finishing.”
BOYS SOCCER
Chambersburg 3, State College 0: The Trojans reversed an earlier 3-0 defeat against the Little Lions by winning the rematch at Trojan Stadium on Tuesday night in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game.
The win could possibly move Chambersburg (9-3-4, 7-3-2 MPC) into one of the top 8 spots in the District 3 Class 4A rankings — they started the night in 10th and both teams above them are done for the regular season.
“We put in one of our better performances of the season, and it came at a good time, on senior night,” Trojan coach Corey Grove said. “It also possibly put us in a place to host a first-round district game.”
Nate Folk scored unassisted to put Chambersburg on the board, then Cardson Ymonnice made it 2-0 from an assist by Theo Deinboeck. Noah Mulewich capped it off with an unassisted insurance tally.
Grove said, “Cardson had a great performance on the wing and capped it off with a goal. Nate and Noah had really nice finishes, both hitting the upper 90. We moved the ball well and created some good team chances.
“Also, our defense and goalkeeper (Tyson Shanholtz) played fantastic tonight to get their ninth shutout of the season.”
The Trojans led in shots (12-5) and corner kicks (5-3).
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Central Dauphin 3, Chambersburg 0: The Rams won games of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-9 to pick up a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Trojans at CASHS Field House on Tuesday night.
“It was tough match tonight against a pretty solid CD team,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “We were outplayed in every area of the game.”
Kasey Moser had 14 digs and 7 kills, plus 4 service points for the Trojans (9-10, 4-8 MPC). Ava Zeigler led in assists with 14 and Nizaya Hawkins produced 3 blocks.
Kaylie Stull had 6 points and 12 digs, Riley Cramer had 5 kills, Olivia Shearer had 4 kills and Allison Bert had 4 points.
Frelin said, “Tonight we celebrated our seniors and we appreciate the opportunity to be a part of their volleyball journey over the last several years.”
FIELD HOCKEY
Greencastle-Antrim 3, Chambersburg 2: The Blue Devils scored on a penalty corner play at the very end of regulation to take a non-league victory over the Trojans at Kaley Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Chambersburg (1-16) got a pair of goals from Jaxin Frazer, the first one taken from the top of the circle. Lacey Mooney made 4 saves in goal.
Greencastle (9-6) got 2 goals from Natalie Medina, a goal and 2 assists from Rowan Shubert and an assist by Camryn Guthrie.
Trojan coach Rachael Sanders said, “Our defense has been solid all year and was able to keep this game very close. Julia Elhajj did a phenomenal job in the backfield, while Ella Sollenberger and Casie Vanaman both had strong showings in the midfield, helping to transition from defense to offense seamlessly.
“It was a tough loss, but it was competitive and both teams put on an excellent show of athleticism.”
