SHIPPENSBURG — The PIAA State Track & Field Championships opened Friday morning at Shippensburg University’s Grove Stadium.
On the first of two days of competition, area athletes did not claim any medals, but two runners were able to reach the final of their event, which will be run Saturday, by qualifying in the top eight.
In Class 3A boys, Chambersburg’s Blake Mallast posted a strong time of 22.13 in the 200 prelims and was the fifth-fastest time, placing him into the final. The day’s best time came from Jesse Myers of State College, a 21.22.
Mallast also competed in the 100 trials, but his time of 10.93 was 13th-best, not quite enough for the final.
McConnellsburg’s Caleb Buterbaugh ran in the prelim race in the Class 2A boys 300 hurdles and finished in 40.48, which ended up as the eighth-best time to just sneak into the final.
In Class 2A boys event finals on Friday, Southern Fulton’s Myles Bard placed 14th in the javelin with a throw of 157-3, while Indian teammate Teagan Ritz competed in the 1600 and his time of 4:48.61 put him in 36th place.
In the Class 3A girls events, Jaylynn Schmuck of Greencastle-Antrim competed in the triple jump. Her best effort of 36-2.75 put her in 25th place.
Two other athletes from Chambersburg competed in the 3A pole vault, but Alaina Morris in the girls and Luke Mertz in the boys did not clear the bar at the first height and were eliminated.
