The Spartans(0-1) hosted the Tigers(1-0) in the season opener for both squads on Wednesday afternoon. The Spartans started Junior pitcher Kade Gress while the Tigers countered with Senior pitcher Landon Arnold.
The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Shaeffer Earley launched a two run shot to left center scoring Hoyt Glenn to give the home team an early 2-0 lead. But it was all Tigers after that.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of third inning when Tucker Seibert, Broc Hostler and Jake Coffman all reached on singles. Landon Arnold knocked in Seibert with an infield ground out and Wade Appleby’s sacrifice fly scored Hostler to tie the game. A strikeout ended the inning.
Arnold retired the Spartans in order in the bottom of the third. Fannett- Metal would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning. With one out Noah Naugle, Logan Hall and Tucker Seibert all singled to load the bases. Broc Hostler struck out for the second out. Senior Jake Coffman delivered a clutch two out single to score Naugle and Hall to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead. A fly out ended the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th Arnold continued to attack Spartan hitters while the Tigers defense played solid defense behind him.
In the top of the 5th the Tigers offense exploded for 12 runs knocking Gress from the game and facing three more Spartan relievers. 12 straight hitters reached base in the big inning. Arnold finished off the Spartans in the bottom of the 5th to lead the Tigers to a 16-2 opening day victory.
Right Hander Arnold went all five innings giving up 2 runs and 2 hits. He issued 1 BB and recorded 3 KO. He threw 71 pitches with 46 going for strikes.
Jake Coffman led the Tigers offensive attack with 4 hits and 4 RBIs. Logan Hall had 3 hits with 4RBIs. Tucker Seibert, Wade Appleby and Broc Hostler all had a pair of hits. Appleby had a pair of RBIs. Landon Arnold unleashed an RBI double off the wall in the big inning. Noah Naugle reached base three times scoring three runs. Adam Hammond also reached three times scoring two runs. Ayden Ryder had 1 RBI. Offensively, the Tigers finished with 16 hits on the day.
The Tigers visit Southern Huntingdon on Friday at 3:00.
