Chambersburg roundup: Softball team runs wild in win over C. York

SOFTBALL
Chambersburg 14, Central York 6: The Trojans were hitting and Bree Paetow was running, and that was enough for a season-opening, non-league victory over Central York on Wednesday afternoon at Norlo Park.

Bree Paetow

Chambersburg scored 5 runs in the 1st inning, then 4 more in the second after the Panthers had tied the game at 5-5. Two runs in the third and 2 more in the fourth produced a sizeable lead.

Trojan coach Chris Skultety said, “I’m really happy the way we came out in attack mode on offense and how we responded in the bottom of the second after we handed them four runs in the top of the inning.”

Paetow was 2-for-4 and stole a total of 7 bases, and the team had 10 total.

“And she got thrown out trying to get her eighth,” Skultety said. “She stole third three times on a delayed steal.”

Addison Gsell led the offense, going 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 runs driven in. Karley Skultety, Marley Onomastico and Kendall Flory each rapped out 2 hits.

Kori Leedy earned the win, pitching 5 innings, while Issie Slimmer hurled 2 innings.

Skultety said, “It was a good start to the season and I’m looking forward to next week, and how we match up with Central Dauphin, Cumberland Valley and Shippensburg.”

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 12, Carlisle 0: The Trojans did just about everything right Wednesday afternoon in a non-league romp over the Thundering Herd in Carlisle.

Pitcher Ryne Mills went the distance in the 5-inning game, striking out 8, walking 2 and allowing just one hit. Of his 64 pitches, 43 were strikes.

Keaton Barclay

“Mills was fantastic today on the mound,” Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. “He gave up a single in the first inning, then cruised the rest of the way. And we played clean ball behind him.”

Mills also had a big hand in the potent offense, going 2-for-2 and belting a 3-run home run to left to close out a 10-run third inning for the Trojans (1-1). Keaton Barclay was 2-for-2 with a triple and drove in 4 runs, and Evan Brown was 3-for-4, and all three hits were doubles.

Already leading 2-0 on Barclay’s two-out, two-run single in the second, Chambersburg put up a big crooked number in the third, scoring 10 times.

Brown doubled and scored on Bryce Murray’s single. Wyatt Martin singled in a run and another scored on a Carlisle error. Barclay then clouted a triple to left that brought in two more runs. Aaron Vasquez had an RBI base hit, Brown doubled in a run and Mills then hit his home run to leftfield.

Folmar said, “We did a lot of good things offensively. We were able to play small ball in the third inning to open things up. The guys did a nice job of bouncing back from yesterday’s game (5-3 loss to JB) by playig with a lot of energy.”

Reese Heverley

GIRLS LACROSSE
Central Dauphin 14, Chambersburg 4: The Trojans showed a lot of improvement since the opener last week, but lost a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Wednesday evening.

“The girls played a solid defensive game against a good CD team, but we came up short,” Chambersburg coach Shane Henry said. “Our defense had 12 caused turnovers.”

Brynn Sekel posted 3 goals for the Trojans (0-2, 0-2 MPC), while Adele Henry scored her first career goal. Goalie Reese Heverley came up with 11 assists.

Henry said, “For only our second game of the season, I’m happy with our progress. We need to continue focusing on eliminating the small errors that are causing turnovers in transition.”

Blake Dupont

BOYS LACROSSE
Central Dauphin 17, Chambersburg 6: The Trojans fell short of the Rams in a Mid Penn Commonwealth defeat Wednesday afternoon in Linglestown.

Chambersburg (0-2, 0-2 MPC) got 18 saves from goalie Kellen Sanders. Blake Dupont scored 3 goals, Ryan Cosey had 2 goals and an assist and Matt Tucker scored once and assisted once. Quinn Makosy, Tavian Ferguson and Blake Hitchens each contributed an assist.

Trojan coach Joey Wilmot said, “We are very inexperienced defensively, and are still trying to figure things out on that side of the ball. CD was much more physical than us and won the majority of the 50-50 ground balls.”
