Chambersburg wrestlers win title in N.Y. tournament

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Chambersburg ventured to Elmira, N.Y. over the weekend to compete in the 30-team Southern Tier Memorial Tournament, and brought some hardware home.

Frank Barrientos

The Trojans took first place in the team standings, outlasting Bellefonte by 3.5 points. Chambersburg produced a pair of champions — Zach Sherman at 124 pounds and Frank Barrientos at 285  — and 5 other place-winners.

After leading the team race all weekend, the Trojans were passed by Bellefonte after the 190 bouts and trailed by 2.5 points. But Barrientos won to add 3 points with his win and another 3 for the pin to lift Chambersburg to the championship.

Barrientos pinned his way through the 285 weight class. In the semifinals, he decked Luke Sottolano of Williamson in 5:26, and in the final, it took only 53 seconds for him to take Seamus Carroll of Horseheads to his back for a pin.

Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “It all came down to that match, and Frank’s opponent was fourth in the New York states last year. When he won, all of our guys went out to celebrate.

“It ended a pretty nice week for us, (beating Central Dauphin) and we got to come up here and spend time together. Everybody did a great job supporting each other.”

Zach Sherman

Sherman did not have to break a sweat in the final — he won by medical forfeit when his opponent, Logan Bellis of Tioga, was not able to wrestle. In earlier rounds, Sherman had 2 pins and a 17-0 tech fall in the semifinals over Trevor Middendorf of Newark Valley.

Ashton Romberger racked up  5 consecutive pins to reach the final, but he was defeated 11-5 by Jayden Duncanson of Tioga. Duncanson secured a takedown in each period to more than offset a pair of reversals by Romberger.

“Romberger pinned some really good kids,” Mentzer said.

Two other Trojans reached the semifinals. Logan Mickey (152) lost 8-3 in the semifinals, and came back to place fourth, and Omar Henchey lost by pin in the semifinals, and ended up in sixth place.

The other two place-winners were Isaac Brambley at 108, who was 5-2 in the event and took fifth, and Cristofer Mendez placed eighth at 101.

“I thought Isaac looked super — he had a bunch of good wins,” Mentzer said.

The tournament allowed teams multiple entries in a weight and Chambersburg ended up using 18 wrestlers. All but one was able to score at least a point.

Mentzer said, “It was a pretty solid weekend. They really performed well from the top to the bottom of the lineup. And we needed everybody to squeeze out that win.”
