Chambersburg roundup: Trojans fall by 3 in Philly showcase

BOYS BASKETBALL
Friends Central 50, Chambersburg 47: The Trojans hit the road for a showcase event — the Jameer Nelson Classic at Widener College — on Saturday afternoon and fell victim to a last-second shot by Friends Central.

Colton Cornwell

Trailing by 3, Chambersburg’s Colton Cornwell bagged a 3-point shot to tie the game at 47 with 10 seconds remaining. But the Phoenix got up the court and their top scorer, Gabe Moore — who had already hit 4 threes — sank another one just before the buzzer to earn the win.

“This was an outstanding experience for our guys and will definitely help us moving forward,” Trojan coach Shawn Shreffler said. “In many ways, it felt like a state playoff game, in terms of driving a long distance and competing against a quality opponent, but there isn’t the finality of losing a state playoff game.”

The loss does not count against Chambersburg’s record for power rankings because Friends Central (6-9) is not a PIAA member.

Shreffler said, “They’re a really nice team with two excellent guards and a nice big inside. They were playing their 15th game of the season already.”

J.J. Kelly led the Trojans (6-2) with 17 points, while Cornwell scored 12 and Landon Buhrman chipped in 9.

“The loss really hurts, but I’m confident it will motivate us,” Shreffler said. “Even though we made a lot of mistakes, we still found a way to tie it late, which speaks to the grit and toughness of our team. They’re a bunch of fighters who will keep working to get better.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Trojans go 0-2 in tournament: Chambersburg played two strong teams in the Central York Tournament on Friday and Saturday, falling to York Catholic 67-51 on Friday and to the host Panthers 64-43 on Saturday afternoon.

Maddie Mills

“We got down to Central York 24-5 after one quarter, but we came back and outscored them 17-12 in the second,” Trojan coach Jamiur King said. “Central York is a good team; unfortunately the score isn’t indicative of how we played. We are putting together some solid possessions, but we have to continue to play better at the other end of the floor.”

Riley Evans nearly had a double-double for Chambersburg (2-6) with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Maddie Mills scored 11 points, while Tori Price had 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Serena Warren scored 8 points.

The Panthers (5-4) put 10 players in the scoring column, with Kylie Rebert getting 14 to lead the way.

On Friday, Mills, a freshman, broke loose for a career-high 30 points in one of the highest-scoring games for a Trojan girl in many seasons. Evans was solid again with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Mariah Shue led the Irish (8-1) with 18 points.
