Trojans sit in 3rd place at Trojan Wars tournament

CHAMBERSBURG — Chambersburg’s wrestling team put only one wrestler into the semifinals, but scored a bunch of bonus points in the consolation rounds Saturday and finds itself in third place after one day of the 10th annual MyHOUSE Trojan Wars tournament at CASHS Field House.

The Trojans’ Zach Sherman won in sudden victory in the quarterfinals at 127 pounds and will face Tanner Guenot of Bald Eagle Area in the semifinals Sunday morning (the round begins at 11 a.m.)

Chambersburg has six other wrestlers still alive in the consolation rounds — Isaac Brambley at 107, Cody Seabolt at 114, Ashton Romberger at 139, Isaiah Tasker at 172, Jaccob Stoner at 189 and Frank Barrientos at 285.

Bonus points helped the Trojans climb the team standings — they produced 14 pins, 3 technical falls and a major decision in the consolation round alone, to go with 5 pins and 4 tech falls in the championship rounds.

“Our kids did a good job of coming back in the consolations, and they scored a lot of points,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said.

Sherman took on No. 3 seed Hayoto Otero of Landstown, VA in the quarterfinals and the two were tied 1-1 after regulation. Then Sherman countered an Otero shot by stepping over him and secured a takedown — a move he just missed in regulation.

Even two Chambersburg wrestlers who were eliminated Saturday scored points. Logan Mickey (152) had a pin and 2 tech falls and Zethan Sleighter (160) had 2 pins.

Grassfield, VA, competing in the event for the first time, produced 4 semifinalists and leads the team race with 129.5 points. Sun Valley is second with 119.5, Chambersburg has 119, Gettysburg is fourth with 109.5 and St. Christopher’s is fifth with 99.5.

Varsity wrestling resumes Sunday morning at 9 with consolation rounds, and the semifinals begin at 11. The Parade of Champions is set for 6:00 with the finals to follow.
