Points fly in Chambersburg’s wrestling win over Boro

CHAMBERSBURG — There was no shortage of points scored in Chambersburg’s wrestling win over Waynesboro.

The Trojans scored 100 bout points and overwhelmed the Indians to take a 48-19 non-league victory at CASHS Field House.

Thanks in part to the new rule that awards 3 points for a takedown, and Chambersburg’s aggressive style, Waynesboro could not keep up, despite having a pair of technical falls itself.

“The kids have been waiting for this first match, and they weren’t quite as sharp as I’d like,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said. “But we were aggressive and looking to score in all of the matches.”

There was no better example than at 152 pounds, where Logan Mickey racked up a 21-11 major over Boro’s Calvin Myers, who won 21 matches last year.

Mickey led 3-1 after one period and 10-2 after two, and ended up with six takedowns, including a couple of nice duck-unders. But Myers caught Mickey and put him on his back midway through the last period, making it 15-10, before Mickey wriggled out, then scored two more takedowns.

“That was the plan, to score from my feet,” Mickey said. “I had a little scare there in the last period, but once I got out I went straight back to my shots and got the points back up.”

Mentzer said, “Mickey’s shots were crisp and confident. He just made that one mistake on a double-leg. But Calvin is a good kid and he put up 21 points on him.”

The run of high point totals began at 139 when the Trojans’ Ashton Romberger piled up a 20-3 technical fall. The Indians then matched it with a 20-5 tech fall from Jayden Rooney. Then came Mickey’s major, followed by an 18-2 tech fall for Waynesboro’s Wyatt Lowans.

The points continued with Isaiah Tasker’s 10-0 victory and a 16-1 tech fall by Jaccob Stoner at 189 for Chambersburg.

“I love watching the kids put up the points, and I like that we gave up only one pin,” Mentzer said.

The Trojans ripped out to a 24-0 lead, thanks to first-period pins by Isaac Brambley, Cody Seabolt and Zach Sherman, and a forfeit win. They also finished with a pin at 285 by Frank Barrientos.

For Waynesboro, Anthony Ausherman notched a pin at 215 and Steven Howard won the night’s closest match, 2-0, over Gabe Nolan at 133. A reversal late in the second period was the only scoring in a battle between two leg riders.
