Maidens hand Trojans defeat in 1st girls wrestling dual

CHAMBERSBURG — The newest high school team in Chambersburg could not match up with the experience of Waynesboro.

The Maidens strung together six pins Thursday night at CASHS Field House and handed the Trojans a 36-18 defeat in the first girls dual wrestling meet for the Chambersburg team.

“Just being on the mat as a team was a success,” Trojan coach Josh Sherman said. “Hats off to Waynesboro — they are a seasoned team and well-coached. We weren’t miles apart, but the difference was they knew how to finish a match.”

The first bout of the night, at 130 pounds, pitted Chambersburg freshman Reagan Evans against Allison Shockey. Evans scored a quick takedown and patiently worked Shockey to her back for a pin in just 35 seconds.

Sherman said, “That was nice to see Evans got a pin for us in the first-ever match.”

From there, the only points the Trojans got were from forfeits to Jessica Li and Aulana Stanton.

Chambersburg had leads in each of the next three bouts, but the Maidens ended up scoring falls in each of them.

Alba Rojas led Boro’s Lexus Mower 5-3 after one period and 5-4 after two. But Mower took her down to her back for a pin in 5:04. At 148, Hadyn Fritz led 1-0 early in the second, but Rylei Young scored a takedown and turned her for a fall in 3:42. At 155, Ashlynn Lippincott surprised the Maidens’ Annabelle Tracey with the opening takedown, but Tracey, a sectional champion last year, reversed her to her back for a pin in 1:13.

“I’m not disappointed at all,” Sherman said. “We fought hard and showed some heart. A couple of the girls were going a little too hard — they needed to slow down just a little bit.”

Waynesboro also got pins from Kenadee Shockey at 170, Keeley Pryor at 112 and Miley Smeltzer at 118.

Sherman said, “We’ll wrestle them again (in January), and I hope I’ll see improvement compared to tonight.
