YORK — The opening round of the District 3 Golf Championships was held at Honey Run G.C. on Thursday and 4 area players survived the first round of cuts.
In the girls Class 3A tournament, Shippensburg’s Kaydee Beckenbaugh played her way into second place and Emily Rensch of Chambersburg is in sixth, and both are still in range of the leader, Piper Smith of Manheim Township.
Beckenbaugh fired a 4-over par 76, which included four birdies — on Nos. 2, 9, 17 and 18. She carded nines of 38-38. Rensch scored a 79 (40-39), she she was able to birdie No. 3 and No. 14.
Also making the cut was Abby Byers of Waynesboro, who shot a 93. Two players who did not make the cut were the Trojans’ Alaina Morris (101) and the Maidens’ Marissa Musolino (111).
In the 3A boys event, only one area golfer is still alive. Tyler Fortney of Waynesboro had an off day, but scored a 79 to make the cut. He is tied for 23rd place, after shooting 41-38 and birdieing No. 15.
The other two area players in the field — Abram Stock of James Buchanan and Ben Horgos of Shippensburg — both shot 91 to miss the cut.
