GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Chambersburg 3, State College 0: Three teams in the Mid Penn Commonwealth handed the Trojans a loss in the first half of the season — Cumberland Valley, Central Dauphin and State College. Chambersburg completed its revenge tour by beating the Little Lions on Thursday night at home, giving them wins in the second half over all 3 teams.
Trojans are now 15-3 (9-3 MPC) and have risen to the No. 5 spot in the District 3 Class 4A rankings.
“We played with a lot of determination tonight,” Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said. “We played hard and we played scrappy, and made some big plays when we needed to.”
Marah Lehman led the Trojans in two categories — service points (10) and digs (14). Other leaders included Riley Evans in blocks (2), Alayna Jones in kills (10) and Ava Zeigler in assists (23).
Cami Bender had 13 digs and 8 points, Karley Skultety came up with 13 digs and 6 points, Evans had 6 kills, while Lehman added 4 and Nizaya Hawkins also had 4.
Frelin said, “State College was down a couple of players, but they still played really well and forced us to terminate plays. This was a big win for our girls.”
FIELD HOCKEY
Big Spring 3, Chambersburg 2, OT: The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to upend the Trojans in overtime in a non-league game in Newville on Thursday afternoon.
“It was a very exciting game,” Chambersburg coach Kelsey Baker said. “It was a tough loss in a close game, but even tougher because we lost the lead. We just have to learn and grow from it. The girls played with their hearts and left it all on the field.”
Jaxin Frazer scored both goals for the Trojans (1-14). The first came on a 1-on-1 against the Bulldog goalie when she scored on a reverse flick. Early in the second quarter, Frazer made it 2-0 when she knocked in a shot after a penalty corner insert from Reagan Barrett.
Big Spring (7-9-1) scored later in the second quarter, tied it in the third and won it in OT.
GIRLS TENNIS
Carlisle 5, Chambersburg 0: The Thundering Herd ended a 2-match win streak by the Trojans by winning each match in straight sets Thursday in Carlisle.
Zoe Dereef, playing at No. 2 singles, played a thriller, but lost 7-5, 7-6 to the Herd’s Mia Pfister.
The No. 2 doubles team of Reese Miller and Shelby Newman also had a close call, falling 6-4, 6-4 to Carlisle’s Kenely Roedl and Macie Burge.
BOYS SOCCER
Central Dauphin 2, Chambersburg 1, OT: The Trojans played the Rams tough in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Trojan Stadium on Thursday night, but gave up a goal in overtime to suffer a defeat.
“Our guys put in another great performance this evening; just fell a little short,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “We’ve proven to ourselves that we can play with anyone in the district the last three weeks. It was a little unlucky for us not to get a result tonight.”
The Trojans (5-9-2, 3-6-2 MPC) got on the scoreboard with an own goal. In shots, CD led 7-6, and also in corner kicks, 4-3.
Grove said, “I thought we created some good chances and defended very well. Our seniors gave everything they had tonight and I’m proud of them and the boys or playing for each other.”
GIRLS SOCCER
Central Dauphin 5, Chambersburg 0: The Rams, ranked No. 1 in District 3 4A, led the Trojans only 1-0 after 60 minutes, but CD ended up taking a 5-0 win in Linglestown in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Thursday evening.
“We were organized and compact on defense,” Chambersburg coach Paul Unruh said. “Unfortunately, a deflected goal, followed by a penalty kick, meant there was no way back into the game.”
The Rams are now 14-1-1, and the Trojans are 6-8-2 (5-6-1 MPC).
Unruh said, “(Goalkeeper) Ashley Mitchell made some absolutely incredible saves for us. We were mentally strong, but CD just wore us down physically. I’m proud of the girls’ attitude and performance.”
