ALTOONA AT CHAMBERSBURG
Game data: Mountain Lions at Trojans, Trojan Stadium, 7 p.m. … Mid Penn Commonwealth game … Live stream available on MidPennBroadcasting.com.
Last week: Chambersburg (3-4, 2-4 MPC) picked up a 28-13 win over Carlisle, its second win in a row, and jumped up to No. 11 in the District 3 Class 6A rankings (the top 10 qualify for the playoffs) … Altoona is 0-7 (0-6 MPC) and was beaten 33-0 by Harrisburg last week, but the previous week, the Mountain Lions played Bishop McDevitt tough in a 28-21 loss.
The opponent: The Mountain Lions run the triple option offense, which has killed the Trojans in recent years … But Altoona has struggled to score this year, scoring 5.85 points per game … QB Mark Harrington has run 102 times for 429 yards and one score … The top fullback is Julian Hazlewood (45-232, 1 TD) … No Mountain Lion receiver has more than 5 catches; Harrington is 17-for-54 (31.5%) for 195 yards, 2 TDs and 6 picks.
Coach’s view: Trojan coach Mark Luther said, “Harrington’s dad played for me when I was at Lock Haven. He’s really not a quarterback, but he’s got to play it for them. It they don’t have to throw the ball, they won’t. If you can take the fullback out of it you can make them do things they don’t want to do. Against an offense like theirs, you have to play assignment football and do your responsibility. If you get it right and stop the fullback, you make them do things they don’t want to do. Against that option, if one guy doesn’t do his assignment, ten you can give up a big play. This week again, it’s a mental thing — our opponent is probably looking at us and thinking that this is one game they can win.”
Unsung: Luther said Evan Brown is a quality receiver who has really helped the punt return team … “In my mind, we’ve done a much better job of catching the punts, and not letting them bounce and lose a bunch of yards,” Luther said. “Evan has really helped us with that.”
Chambersburg statistics: Passing — Ceagan Truett 59-for-113 (52%), 656 yards, 3 TDs, 6 int. … Rushing — Imani Watson 56-298, 3 TDs; Antonio Harrison 65-298, 5 TDs … Receiving — Trever Luther 27-345 (128 avg.); Evan Brown 7-110, 1 TD; Jason Chambers 7-95, 1 TD … Tackles — Stanley Lozius 78 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss; Dylan Panfili 64 tackles; Chambers 39 tackles, 2 interceptions; Isaiah Tasker 38 tackles; Brady Rosenberry 37 tackles.
JUNIATA AT GREENCASTLE-ANTRIM
Game data: Indians at Blue Devils, at Kaley Field, 7 p.m. … Non-league game … Live steam available on MidPennBroadcasting.com.
Last week: Greencastle (1-6, 1-5 Mid Penn Colonial) was edged 30-29 by Milton Hershey, with a controversial no call in the end zone denying a possible winning catch … Juniata (5-2, 5-1 Mid Penn Capital), from Mifflintown, walloped Newport 33-6 … The Indians’ 2 losses are to Selinsgrove and Line Mountain.
The opponent: Juniata plays a variation of a wing-T, with plenty of motions and misdirection to keep the defense honest … QB Wyatt Ehrenzeller has been very accurate with his passing, hitting 60 of 90 passes for 872 yards, 13 scores and 3 picks … The top runners are Javier Lopez (99-623, 6 TDs) and Lane Peiper (43-350, 4 TDs) … Jasper Schepps has caught 31 balls for 463 yards and 8 TDs, and Connor Goreman has 17 catches for 287 yards and 4 scores
Coach’s view: G-A coach Devin McCauley said, “I don’t think we’ve played this school since back in the 1970’s and 80’s, so it’s a little unique scenario. We have film, of course, but two of the three we got were played on muddy fields, which makes it harder to gauge their speed. They know how to win games, they have sound fundamentals and are well-coached. With the wing-T, we have to read our keys and not get caught looking in the backfield. They have a lot of different motions that give you extra window dressing. They’re a good football team. But I think we match up athletically with them. I think it’ll come down to which team is disciplined enough to stop the run game.”
Unsung: McCauley said Mason Mellott was named the Lineman of the Week on both offense and defense … “He’s really played well on both sides of the ball over the last few weeks,” McCauley said.
G-A statistics: Passing — Sean Marshall 55-for-105 (52.4%), 742 yards, 6 TDs, 8 int.; Lane Barry — 20-for-32 (62.5%), 272 yards, 3 TDs, 1 pick … Rushing — Noah Shifflett 36-212, 2 TDs; Lars Galinanes 55-211, 1 TD; Blake Rueter 43-206, 1 TD … Receiving — Carter McCauley 49-692, 7 TDs; Rueter 7-101, 1 TD … Tackles — McCauley 44 tackles, 3 sacks, 7 tackles for loss; Shifflett 43 tackles, 2 picks; Ben Belleau 35 tackles.
