Fannett-Metal right hander Landon Arnold made history on Monday evening when he pitched a perfect game at Rockwood. Arnold’s fastball was popping all game as he recorded 15 strikeouts in a dominating performance. Arnold’s command was spot on from the beginning to the end. He threw the complete game in just 80 pitches with 60 of them going for strikes.
The Tigers defense only needed to make six plays during the game. Three of those plays were not routine and helped preserve the history making performance. In the first inning a Rocket batter hit a dribbler in front of home plate that catcher Drew Goshorn was able to get to in time to record the out. Also in the first inning second baseman Broc Hostler back handed a ball up the middle and threw the batter out at first. The last close play came in the fourth inning when third baseman Logan Hall charged a slow roller and threw out the batter at first.
The Tiger offense scored three runs in the first inning, added a run in the fourth and put the game away with five runs in the sixth.
Six different Tiger hitters recorded hits in the game off Rocket Hurlers Hunter Whipkey and Carson Brown. Noah Naugle had a pair of RBIs to lead the offense. Tucker Seibert and Darren Detweiler each scored a pair of runs.
With the victory the Tigers close out the regular season with a 15-4 record. The Tigers have won 14 of their last 15 games and they are on a four game winning streak heading into next week’s District Five Playoffs. Their lone loss during that time is to Greater Latrobe in the championship game of the Altoona Curve Invitational.
Tonight’s victory also had special meaning for Fannett-Metal Head Coach Paul Coffman as he reached the 200 win milestone in his 20th year as coach of the Tigers.
The Tigers will host a first round playoff game next Tuesday. Their opponent is yet to be determined.
