Chambersburg roundup: Trojans shut out CD in baseball

BASEBALL
Chambersburg 5, Central Dauphin 0: Joey Diaz fired a complete game 4-hitter, walked just one and struck out 11 to lift the Trojans to a shutout win over the Rams in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at Greene Township Park on Monday.

Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said, “Joey’s had mostly good outings all year, but today’s game was probably as good as any of our guys have thrown that I can remember. He started by giving up back-to-back hits, but after that he controlled the game. He just pounded the strike zone — the only walk he gave up was with two outs in the seventh.”

The Trojans (6-12, 4-10 MPC) scored a run in the second inning, then added 2 insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings against Central Dauphin (11-7, 8-5 MPC).

In the second, Diaz singled and Chase Stenger walked, and with two outs, Aaron Vasquez hit an RBI base hit.

Evan Brown led off the fifth with a double to left and moved up on a fly ball by Ceagan Truett. After a walk to Tyler Brechbiel, Jake Folmar bunted, and on the play at the plate, Brown scored. With two outs, Chase Stenger produced a base hit to make the score 3-0.

In the sixth, Vasquez led off with a walk and moved to third on an error on a fly ball hit by Truett. Brechbiel lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Vasquez and a two-out single by Folmar scored the final run.

“The offense got some two-out RBI hits that we haven’t been able to get most of the year,” coach Folmar said. “Those made a big difference and enabled Joey to pitch with a bigger lead.”

The Trojans play at Shippensburg on Tuesday in their final game of the season. The suspended game vs. Waynesboro, in which Chambersburg led 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning, will not be finished because both teams had games Monday and will play Tuesday, and Tuesday is the cutoff date for district qualifying.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Bishop McDevitt 11, Chambersburg 8: The Trojans played in one of their closest contests of the season, but were defeated by the Crusaders in a non-league game in Harrisburg to end their season Monday night.

Chambersburg coach Keara Allshouse said, “It was a hard-fought game until the very end. We know what we need to work on in the offseason to get ready for next year.”

For the Trojans (2-16), Reagan Barrett fired in 5 goals to lead the attack. Unofficially, she scored 36 goals and had 9 assists this year.

Gabriella Sabatino (26 goals, 8 assists) added two goals and Mollie Yardley-Gontz put in one goal. McKenna Myers was credited with an assist.

BOYS LACROSSE
Chambersburg 13, Bishop McDevitt 10: The Trojans closed out their season with a non-league victory over the Crusaders at Trojan Stadium on Monday night and Sam Kunkleman had the spotlight.

Sam Kunkleman

Kunkleman came into the game with 177 career points, one behind the program’s top scorer, Corey Boushell in 2009. Kunkleman blew past the record by scoring a goal and adding 5 assists to become the new record holder.

“I was super proud of these seniors and how far they’ve come as men,” Chambersburg coach Joey Wilmot said. “This is the first group I’ve had for four years and they’ve matured so much. I’m going to miss coaching these guys. And it was a special night for Sam.”

Goalie Kristian Freeman made 13 saves and ends his career second in program history in saves, with just under 500, and second in wins.

“Kristian is going to play in college, but for the rest of the seniors, this was their last meaningful lacrosse game and it was nice for them to end their careers with a win,” Wilmot said.

Matt Tucker (4 goals, 1 assist) and Riley Harmon (3, 1) led the scoring for Chambersburg, which finished 8-10. Ryan Cosey had 3 goals, Logan Mulkey and Garrett Iser each had a goal and Blake Dupont gained an assist.
