SOFTBALL
Greencastle-Antrim 7, West Perry 6: The Blue Devils squeezed out a narrow victory over the Mustangs on a rainy Thursday afternoon in Elliottsburg and that clinched a co-championship in the Mid Penn Colonial Division with Northern York.
Both teams finished 12-2 in the division, and they split the two games played against each other. The team with the best District 3 ranking (G-A currently is No. 4 and Northern No. 5) will qualify for the Mid Penn Conference tournament, which is next Wednesday and Thursday.
The Blue Devils still have non-league games scheduled at home vs. Chambersburg on Friday, home vs. East Pennsboro on Tuesday and at Northeastern on Wednesday (all 3 of those opponents will be in the District 3 playoffs). Northern has a makeup game to schedule vs. Carlisle.
Greencastle (14-3) got a scare in the bottom of the fifth inning. Trailing 7-2, West Perry loaded the bases with one out against Kaidyn Zimmerman and Addison Weist lofted a grand slam just over the fence to make it a one-run game at 7-6.
“Kaidyn was having trouble holding the ball because it was wet and she gave her good pitch to hit,” G-A coach Mark DeCarli said.
The Blue Devils were scoreless in the top of the sixth, and at that time, the umpires called the game for rain.
DeCarli said, “Right away, the umpires told us the game was suspended and we’d have to reschedule it. But we told them that if a game is through five complete innings, it’s official. We asked them to make a call to verify that and they came back and said we were right, the game was over.”
Zimmerman allowed 6 hits and 3 walks while fanning 3 in her 5 innings.
Kylie Kerns was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third inning, her second of the year. Kindal Rice doubled in two runs in the second inning and Meadow Gambacurta had an RBI.
