Greencastle-Antrim 7, Waynesboro 6: Some quality relief pitching and clutch hitting by Meadow Gambacurta enabled the Blue Devils to pull out a Mid Penn Colonial victory over the Maidens on Monday at home.
Waynesboro (5-10, 2-8 MPC) got to starter Mckenzie Wingert early and led 5-1 after the top of the third inning. But Greencastle (10-2, 8-1 MPC) got right back in it with 3 runs in the bottom of the third, two on a home run to dead center by Meadow Gambacurta, the other on e base hit by Kindal Rice.
The Maidens added an unearned run in the fifth to lead 6-4. But in the bottom of the sixth, G-A’s Alexis Jones hit a one-out single, followed by a hit from Caroline Logsdon. A fielder’s choice moved them up and Gambacurta brought them home with a single to tie the game.
In the seventh, Kylie Kerns led off with a single and Kaidyn Zimmerman drove her in to win the game on a drive to centerfield for a triple.
“Kerns got on and we had Zimmerman bunting, but the first pitch was a ball,” Blue Devil coach Mark DeCarli said. “So we took the bunt off and she hits one over the centerfielder’s head.”
Paiton Gordon relieved Wingert and threw 3 innings, giving up 5 hits and the unearned run, with 3 strikeouts. Kiersten Swain finished up in the last 2 innings (1 hit, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts) to earn the win.
DeCarli said, “Both Gordon and Swain did very well. It’s nice to have four girls to depend on for pitching.”
Gambacurta was 3-for-4 and drove in 5 runs, and reached the 100-hit mark for her career.
“She got that hit and then broke out with some clutch hits; she came alive,” DeCarli said.
Greencastle and Northern York, each with one loss at the top of the Colonial standings, meet Wednesday in Dillsburg.
BASEBALL
Waynesboro 2, Greencastle-Antrim 0: The Indians’ Mason Gochenour allowed 9 hits and one walk in a complete game effort, and somehow held the Blue Devils scoreless in a Mid Penn Colonial game at Waynesboro on Monday afternoon.
“Same old story, different day,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “I don’t know if I can remember ever getting nine hits and not scoring. We seem to not be able to ID what a pitcher is doing to get us out in tough situations — that’s why we haven’t been able to produce in those situations.”
Avery Horst started for G-A (6-7, 3-6 MPC) and gave up 4 hits and 2 earned runs.
Logan Clapsaddle hit a third-inning double that led to the first run for Waynesboro (10-3, 9-1 MPC).
