Chambersburg roundup: Girls tennis earns big victory

Chambersburg 4, Carlisle 1: The Trojans went to three sets in two of the matches and won both of them, paving the way for a Mid Penn Commonwealth victory over the Thundering Herd in Carlisle on Monday afternoon.

“I’m extremely proud of my girls,” Chambersburg coach Niko Mucci said. “This was our fourth win in the last five matches. And it’s my first win over Carlisle (boys or girls) since I’ve been coaching.”

At No. 1 singles, Sarah Vessah dropped the first set, 6-1, to Rory Ade, but then roared back to take her down, 6-0, 6-2.

The No. 1 doubles team of Reese Miller and Ashlee Barrett also lost the first set (6-4) against the Herd’s Emily Coombs and Elena Rasmussen, but rallied to take the next two, 6-2 and 7-6.

Mucci said, “We celebrated Senior Night and my seniors delivered, with both Sarah and Ashlee getting wins.”

No. 2 singles was won by Charlie Kalathas for Chambersburg (5-5, , 2-3 MPC), 6-1, 6-1, over Amelia Hough, and the No. 2 doubles team of Shelby Newman and Leah Wadel picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Macie Burge and Savannah Masgalas of the Herd (5-6).
