CHAMBERSBURG — Speed kills, and the abundance of speed on the Chambersburg football team proved a bit too much for Northern York to handle Friday night.
The Trojans (1-1) scored early and often by showing off their quickness and downed the Polar Bears 51-7 in a non-league game at Trojan Stadium.
“We did a great job of getting the ball to our speed guys in space, we rushed the ball better and (quarterback) Riley (Harmon) had some really nice throws,” Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. “It was a great win; now we have to build on it and continue to get better.”
Andy Jean opened the scoring for the Trojans, taking a short pass from Harmon 48 yards for a score. The defense had Northern (1-1) inside its own 10 after two tackles for a loss, when quarterback Grady Bonin lost the handle on the ball on a tackle by Jude Grillo that went for a safety and a 9-0 lead.
Later in the first quarter, Rhaigeon Parker scored on a 29-yard pass from Harmon and Imari Watson Watson ran the ball in from the Polar Bear 5 for a 30-0 lead.
“Overall team speed was a huge factor in the game,” Luther said. And the defense, outside of their one drive just before halftime, controlled the line of scrimmage. We made them put the ball in the air and their sophomore QB still has some growing pains. We pinned them deep a few times and got short fields for the offense.”
After Northern’s Cole Bartram scored before halftime to make it 30-7, Parker took the second-half kickoff back for an 85-yard touchdown.
Luther said, “The floodgates kind of opened then, and we were able to get a lot of kids some playing time in the second half.”
Harmon had an 8-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and in the fourth, Jake Folmar caught a 35-yard pass from Ceagan Truett. Between Harmon and Truett, the QB’s were 15-for-20 for 234 yards.
