NEWVILLE- The Big Spring Bulldogs ended an 11-game losing streak to the Shippensburg Greyhounds 21-7 to retake the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 2010.
The visiting Greyhounds broke into the scoring column first in the second quarter. Mark Carothers Jr capped off a 10 play 71-yard drive with a 36 yard run on a reverse for the 7-0 lead. Carothers Jr had an eight yard run to pick up a first down to jump start the drive. Brady Maciejewski hit Aydin Mentzer for another eight and first down, on fourth and one Pat Eichelberger plowed through for a two yard gain.
The Bulldogs answered quickly as Ben Fickel returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for the score. Fickel put the host up, for good, two plays later with a 34 yard interception return. Big Spring missed a 43 yard field goal right before the half.
The Bulldog defense was stingy in the second half holding the Hounds to 32 yards.
The Bulldogs iced the game late in the fourth as Grant Hall plunged in from two yards out capping a 10 play 47 yard drive.
Big Spring outgained the Hounds 236-159. The Bulldogs were led by Hall with 87 yards rushing and Connor Green added 76. For Ship Carothers Jr had 71 yards. Big Spring was 6-13 on third downs while the Hounds were again 0-7. The Bulldogs were just 1-5 on thirds in the first half, but late in the game were 3-4 on third and 1-1 on fourth during that icing touchdown drive.
Everson Weller led the Hounds defense with 12 tackles (8 solo) and Kayden Shope chipped in 11 (8 solo). Both players had one tackle for a loss and Weller had the only sack. Ayden Estep had two pass break ups.
Shippensburg will host Spring Grove this Friday September 8 at 7:00 p.m.
