Trojan wrestlers’ run at states ends vs. Waynesburg

HERSHEY — Chambersburg took an early lead against Waynesburg Central.

But once the Raiders started rolling, it was all downhill for the District 7 power and the Trojans were eliminated from the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships on Saturday morning at Giant Center.

Waynesburg (16-4) won each of the final nine bouts to wipe out a 16-3 Chambersburg lead and moved on with a 48-16 victory in the third round of consolations.

The Trojans finished their most successful dual season run with a 21-5 record and went out in the top eight teams in the PIAA.

“Where we have good dudes in our lineup, they have legit dudes,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “When we had that lead, I turned to my assistant and said, ‘Against any other team in the state except this one, I’d feel pretty good about our chances.'”

In the first bout, Zach Sherman lost a close one, 2-1, to Ky Szewczyk, then the Trojans got a 12-0 major from Rylan Carter at 121, a pin in 1:54 by Luke Mentzer at 127 and a forfeit win for Ashton Romberger at 133 to take a 16-3 lead.

Then the onslaught began, with the Raiders winning by pin in six of the final nine bouts. Two-time defending state champion Mac Church needed just 18 seconds at 145 and defending state champ Rocco Welsh piled up a big lead before pinning Zach Evans in 2:08 at 215.

Coach Mentzer said, “Sherm, Rylan and Mentz wrestled well and (Logan) Mickey (at 139) and (Ivan) Mixell (at 160) made some progress. They were capable of winning physically, but not quite good enough technically, and that’s something we can work on.”

Chambersburg next competes in the District 3 Section III Tournament at Mechanicsburg next Saturday.

“This week will be a little different (in preparation); we’ll have to back off some,” Mentzer said. “But being up here and getting a taste of it should benefit all of these kids down the road.”
