Trojan boys grab 1st place in 2 events at MPC swimming

NEW KINGSTOWN — Chambersburg placed fourth in the boys team standings and fifth in girls as the Mid Penn Conference swimming championships wrapped up Saturday afternoon at Cumberland Valley H.S.

Trojan junior Derek Estep won his second event of the weekend on Saturday by hitting the wall first in the 100 freestyle in 46.18. He won the 200 free on Friday.

Alex Kaczmark

“Derek had two great and fast swims,” Chambersburg boys coach Chad White said. “His 200 free showed incredible mental toughness, and he also had some very fast anchor splits on the 200 medley and 400 free relays.”

The 400 free relay team of Alex Kaczmark, Jed Ritchie, Brandon Estep and Derek Estep took the other area first place Saturday, with a time of 3:11.42.

White said, “That relay set a team record, and it was our first relay win ever at Mid Penns. This was the most points we’ve scored (475) since they combined into one meet (Class 3A and 2A) about 20 years ago. All the boys who competed had at least one lifetime best time.”

Ritchie took fourth in the 500 free, Brandon Estep was fourth in the backstroke and Kaczmark was fifth in the 100 free.

“Alex had a breakout swim Friday, taking third in the fly, and is close to he qualifying mark for states, as a freshman,” White said. “Brandon had two fourth-place finishes and is looking sharp. Jed had two really solid swims and had a smart pace in the 500.”

For the Trojan girls, Margot Ritchie had the only two top-10 finishes Saturday, taking 8th in the breaststroke and 10th in the 100 free.

Lily Evans

“Margot had an outstanding weekend,” Chambersburg girls coach Hali Cormany said. “She dropped a lot of time in her IM on Friday and the breaststroke today. She’s flown under the radar to this point, so I’m excited for what’s to come.”

The Trojans placed fifth in the team race, just 4 points out of fourth.

Cormany said, “It was a solid weekend and every girl had a best time or was right on their best. Abby Caltrider, Ritchie, Layne Rydbom and Maddie Shifler swam great relays on Friday — their best swims all year.

“Kayla Wolfe had a tough day, swimming back-to-back races, and she dropped time in both. Lily Evans had her best 500 free all season. I’m excited to see these girls in the postseason.”
