Football preview: Red-hot Blue Devils host rival Indians

The football rivalry between Greencastle-Antrim and Waynesboro has been one of streaks lately.

The Blue Devils had won at least 10 in a row over the Indians until ‘Boro picked up a win in 2013. But the Indians have won eight in a row since then.

Greencastle, off to a sizzling 3-0 start, hopes this is the year it can turn that around in its direction again when it hosts Waynesboro this Friday at 7 p.m. at Kaley Field in the teams’ first Mid Penn Colonial contest of the season.

“Being rivals, there’s always a little extra juice for this one,” G-A coach Devin McCauley said. “We know we’ll get their best shot, and I know we’ll be fired up.”

The Indians come in with a 1-2 record, having lost last week to Chambersburg, 17-0.

The Trojans were able to contain ‘Boro quarterback Jaylon Bean and limit big plays. That will be Greencastle’s task this week, too.

“He’s pretty athletic and runs the show with his ability to run,” McCauley said of Bean. “He and (running back Mikel) Holden have a nice two-man game in the backfield.”

G-A strong safety Blake Diller made 12 tackles last week in a 35-0 win over Delone and leads the team with 21 tackles.

“He was just given that position before our first game and it’s pretty impressive how he’s played,” McCauley said.

The Blue Devil offense has also played well, averaging almost 39 points per game. G-A already has 781 rushing yards (7.51 average per run) and new quarterback Logan Alvey has hit 16 of 25 throws for 298 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions.

McCauley said, “To this point we’re very pleased with the play of our offensive line, and our downfield blocking from the receivers and backs has been a huge factor. We’ve had some success there, but we have tests coming down the pike, starting with this week.

“Alvey has had a good start, with some pretty impressive numbers. We’ve gotten our running game going, and that allows us to set up some passes, and he’s got some receivers he can count on.”

Waynesboro will present a challenge on Friday.

McCauley said, “Their defense is pretty active — they use a three- or four-man front and they are aggressive with their linebackers. This is the best front we’ve seen, so our line will have to match their aggressiveness.”

NOTES: The game will be live-streamed on MidPennBroadcasting.com and WRGG.org … Other leading tacklers for the Blue Devils are Logan Shifflett (17), Darren Kline (16) and Jake Yelton (14) … Elijah Britner has 4 tackles for loss and Yelton and Seth Stouffer have 3 each … Parker Funk has 5 sacks … Tavon Cooper has run 40 times for 468 yards and Stouffer has 7 catches for 185 yards and 4 scores.
