But strong defense and explosive offense in the fourth quarter led to an 11-0 run — the first 7 by Jacob Bassham — and the Trojans outscored the Indians 20-4 in the fourth on their way to a 52-40 victory. Chambersburg finishes the 2021 part of their schedule with a 7-1 record; ‘Boro falls to 6-2, with both of its losses to the Trojans.

Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said, “It was a fantastic win tonight against an opponent that our program has a ton of respect for. They dictated the flow of the game in the first half and (Jaylon) Bean was outstanding. However, we came out of the locker room with a lot more focus and urgency.”

Two free throws by Eli Shearer near the end of the third period gave the Trojans a 32-31 lead, their first since the opening quarter. Then a drive by the Indians’ Reese Cover and a 3-pointer by Michael Young gave Waynesboro a 36-32 advantage with 8 minutes to go.

However, the first 2:48 of the fourth period was all Chambersburg.

After a turnover, Bassham scored on a fast break, assisted by Shearer. After another turnover, Bassham knocked down a three for a 37-36 lead. After a ‘Boro miss, Andon Martin fed Bassham for a turnaround jumper. Noah Yeager then took a charge, and, after two offensive rebounds, Martin scored on a layup. After another Indian missed shot, Shearer drove inside and lifted a runner into the net for a 43-36 lead.

Waynesboro’s Ryan Shaffer finally broke the skid with a jumper in the lane, but Jai’tavius Kelly hit a short jumper and layup on consecutive possessions — assisted by Noah Yeager and Martin, respectively — to make it 47-38 with 2:25 left, and the Trojans closed it out from there.

“Our fourth quarter was really good at both ends of the floor,” Shreffler said. “We were much more solid defensively and shared the ball extremely well, both in transition and in the half-court. The competition the past two days has shown us many things we need to work on to keep lifting our ceiling as a team.”

Bassham scored 9 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, while Shearer added 13 points and Nevin Yeager scored a career-high 9 points. Shearer was named the tournament’s MVP, and Bassham was selected to the all-tournament team.

For Waynesboro, Bean had 13 (8 in the first quarter) and Cover added 12.

In the third-place game, Gettysburg defeated South Western, 56-51.
