Last week: Greencastle (4-5, 2-4 MPC) won a thrilling 37-34, three-overtime contest over West Perry … G-A is No. 11 in the District 3 Class 4A power rankings, but even a win might not be enough to lift them into 10th and the final playoff spot … Brady Diller had a big game vs. the Mustangs, scoring on a long run and catching 2 TD passes in overtime, including the game-winner … CB Seth Stouffer made two straight excellent plays to deny West Perry TD passes … S Lorcan Wright (13 tackles) now has 116 for the season … “Logan Shifflett had a lot of tackles, too, and on offense, fullback David Niebauer had a nice game blocking,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said … Shippensburg (9-0, 6-0 MPC) will capture the Colonial Division with a win, or if Waynesboro loses to Northern York … The Hounds defeated East Pennsboro last week, 21-6 … Ship is ranked No. 2 in the District 3 Class 5A rankings behind Governor Mifflin.
The Blue Devils: McCauley said, “We’ll have to play really good defense and not make mistakes. They are good at forcing their opponents out of their game plan, but we’ll have to play good defense, run the ball effectively and win the turnover battle.” … Tavon Cooper leads the Blue Devils on the ground with 712 yards and 5 TDs and David Niebauer has 508 and one … QB Taylor Conrad is 36-for-67 (53.7%), 6 scores and 2 interceptions … Cooper (18-199, 1 TD), Diller (14-177, 5 TDs) and Ethan Shank (10-238, 3 TDs) are the top receivers .. On defense, Shank has 98 tackles and 3 interceptions, Stouffer has 2 picks and Shiflett has 75 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries … Wright has forced 2 fumbles … Kicker Nate Kirkwood has made 21 of 24 extra points and is 3-for-9 on field goals
The Greyhounds: The Greyhounds have a strong running game, as usual, but have split up the load among 4 backs — Traevon Kater has 68 carries for 584 yards and 4 scores, followed by Nathan Beam (94-455, 3), Amari Kerr (62-434, 7) and Diesel Koser (71-312, 1) … QB Tucker Chamberlin has completed 47 of 83 passes, for 930 yards, 12 touchdowns and 2 picks … Erby Weller is his favorite receiver (28-619, 8 TDs) and Anthony Smith has 11 catches for 221 yards and 3 TDs … Smith, 6-foot-6, 255 pounds and a Minnesota commit, is the top defensive player at end … McCauley said, “They do a nice job of game-planning and they can attack you all over the field. They play really sound defense, and if they get a lead, they can shorten the game with their run game — it’s been a nice recipe for them.”
Coach’s viewpoint: “It was a good win last week, and it led to a good week of practice,” McCauley said. “It energized the guys. Having that nice finish helped everybody’s psyche, and I think the kids are ready for this challenge. But Ship is a good, sound and balanced football team.”
