Last week: The Trojans (2-7, 0-6 MPC) were defeated 23-14 by Cumberland Valley … RB Rashawn Williams picked up a season-high 85 yards on 18 carries and has 310 yards for the season … QB Jermere Jones ran 10 times for 67 yards and hit 3 of 6 passes … Jones is expected to get more playing time this week, but Riley Harmon may still get PT, too … Grant Hopple and James Lilley registered sacks … “Williams had some good runs and Hopple made some nice tackles,” Trojan coach Mark Luther said … Harrisburg (8-1, 5-0 MPC) had its closest win to date, sneaking past State College, 15-13 … A victory over the Trojans will clinch the Commonwealth title.
The Trojans: Chambersburg has allowed 936 more yards on defense than it has gained on offense, and has allowed 30.9 points per game while scoring 13.6 … In 154 pass attempts, 3 Trojan quarterbacks have been intercepted 13 times … Jones has carried the ball 80 times for 374 yards and 4 TDs, and has connected on 50 of 90 passes (55%) for 870 yards and 9 TDs … Rhaigeon Parker is up to 18 catches for 393 yards and 3 TDs, while Andy Jean-Baptiste has 16 catches for 184 yards and a score … “It’ll be a challenge for the offense,” Luther said. “Their defense is very basic — they don’t play much man-to-man and they don’t blitz much. But their line gets off the ball and gets penetration and forces their opponents to make mistakes.”
The Cougars: Harrisburg seems to have fewer superstars than usual, but the team has been no less effective … QB Shawn Lee has completed 73 of 109 passes for 719 yards, 8 TDs and 2 interceptions, and Zakii Lewis is 45-for-65 for 598 yards, 6 TDs and 5 picks … The Cougars have completed 68% of their passes … The top receivers are wideout Justin Cook (38 catches, 418 yards, 4 TDs) and RB Kyle Williams (50-550, 8) … Williams has picked up 587 yards on the ground and scored 4 times, and Mahkai Hopkins has 503 yards and 8 scores … Luther said, “Their offense is balanced. They don’t throw a ton, but they don’t need to usually. They have a couple of 300-pound lineman and they can run right at you. And when that happens, it opens up the passing game and they can hit some big plays.”
Coach’s viewpoint: “We’ll have to play a mistake-free, almost perfect game,” Luther said. “We know we’ll be playing in the rain, so maybe we can force some turnovers. But that only helps if we don’t turn the ball over ourselves.”
