NEFFSVILLE — Manheim Township scored two first-half goals against the wind, then managed to hold off Chambersburg in the second half in less than ideal weather conditions on Tuesday afternoon.

The first-round District 3 Class 4A girls soccer playoff game ended with a 2-1 win for the No. 2 seed Blue Streaks (16-3), who move into Saturday’s quarterfinals against No. 7 seed Ephrata (16-4).

The Trojans, the 15th seed, finished with a 7-10-2 record.

“We were in every single game this year,” Chambersburg coach Ed Franchi said. “It seemed like the bounces didn’t go our way in a lot of games, so I think our record doesn’t reflect how good of a team we were.”

Chambersburg lost 10 games, and seven of them had a one-goal difference. The worst loss was 3-0 to Ephrata, a game in which the Trojans dominated the statistics.

On Tuesday, Manheim Township struck in the 29th and 38th minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Liza Suydam scored the first goal and Jada Turned knocked in the second.

Franchi said, “The weather played a factor because it was rainy, cold and windy. But it was weird, because we had the wind at our backs in the first half and they scored twice and then we scored against the wind in the second. Actually, in the first half, I think we had to ball in our offensive end more than they did.

“Even though we were down 2-0 at the half, we kept fighting and put one in. And we kept the pressure on and had a couple of opportunities at the end.”

Ahsia Thomas scored the Trojans’ goal, on an assist from Aubrey Pyne. Thomas, a junior, led the team in scoring this year with 17 goals and 3 assists, while Pyne, also a junior, produced 7 goals and 10 assists.

“Manheim Township was a very talented, organized and physical team; and I think they’re pretty young, too,” Franchi. “They moved off the ball well and controlled the middle, but I thought we really hung tough.”
