GREENCASTLE — It didn’t take Greencastle-Antrim long to establish its superiority Monday night.
In a first-round game of the District 3 Class 3A girls soccer playoffs at Kaley Field, the Blue Devils scored three goals in the game’s first 15 minutes and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Cocalico.
Greencastle (18-1) moves into the quarterfinals on Thursday, and will host either Lampeter-Strasburg (13-6) or Solanco (14-4) at Kaley Field at 7 p.m. The L-S vs. Solanco game was postponed Monday and will be be played Tuesday.
“We told the girls that in the first round last year we beat Cocalico only 2-0 and that we could do better,” G-A assistant coach Toby Henson said. “We needed to show how we can play. So when we got those three early goals, that made a statement and delivered on our promise.”
The Blue Devils’ big three did most of the damage on offense: Courtney Andruczk — who recently committed to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara next year — scored three goals and added two assists, Haley Noblit tallied three goals and had one assist and Avery Parks had a goal and an assist.
“We asked the team to move the ball, pass to feet and let the strikers do their jobs,” Henson said. “We want to push the ball outside then bring it back inside. Haley Noblit really excelled at that in the second half.”
Abbie Guthrie scored the other goal and Maddie Baine was credited with an assist.
The G-A defense allowed only two shots on goal. One found the net and goalkeeper Lexi Nelson saved the other.
Henson said, “The defense played lights out and made it better for Lexi.”
The back four consists of Karleigh Bubeck, Shaina Overcash, Rylee Henson and Kendyl Moats.
