MANCHESTER — A goal by Northeastern on a deflected ball in overtime ended the season of the Chambersburg boys soccer team on Tuesday night.
The Bobcats captured a 1-0 win in a District 3 Class 4A first-round game when a shot hit the leg of a Trojan defender and ricocheted into the net with 8 minutes left in the first 15-minute overtime period for a golden goal.
“We’re young, and we made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes,” Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. “But we had some good opportunities. Lleyton Lovett hit the post with a shot about 10 minutes into the second half. We did a nice job for about the first 15-20 minutes of the second half and moved the ball well.
“It was a very sloppy game with the wind, the rain and the cold, but both teams had to play in it. The two seniors we had starting tonight might have tried to take too much on their shoulders and struggled a little.”
Grove said right back Jeyner Jimenez came in and played well, as did left back Brycen Kuhns, and goalkeeper Drew Cover was in good form, too.
“Jeyner had such a good game and it was a shame the goal went off his leg,” Grove said. “Cover was probably the player of the game — he made two saves he had no business making. It was great to see a sophomore step up in a big game.”
Chambersburg, the No. 9 seed, finished with a 10-6-1 record and had only two senior starters.
“The boys battled all season and we competed with everybody we played except (unbeaten) Central Dauphin,” Grove said. “We should have nine starters coming back next year — five were sophomores this year and one was a freshman. The record is not bad, but it was a little disappointing considering what we’ve been doing lately. But you have to have some perspective since it was such a young team.”
The Bobcats (15-3-1), the No. 8 seed, will face No. 1 Central Dauphin (17-0) on Saturday in a quarterfinal game.
