Last week: The Blue Devils 3-5, 1-4 MPC) played in another close game, falling 24-13 to Northern, after trailing only 17-13 late … Six of G-A’s eight games have been decided by two scores or less … “It’s just a very even league,” Greencastle coach Devin McCauley said. “If we had gotten Chambersburg (16-14 loss) and had kept the lead over East Pennsboro (27-19 loss), it may have changed our attitude enough for more wins. We just need some things to go our way.” … McCauley said John Redos had a good game on the offensive line last week, and (LB) Logan Shifflett “played another great game — he had two sacks and 13 or 14 tackles.” … West Perry (4-4, 2-3 MPC) took a 14-6 lead over unbeaten Shippensburg last week, but the Hounds scored the next 42 points.
The Blue Devils: McCauley said one aspect of having so many close games is that some players have been on the field a lot … “We figured out that our four defensive backs were on the field for every snap for the first seven games,” he said. “We’ve had so many games that almost come down to the last possession.” … QB Taylor Conrad returned after an injury and hit only 4 of 13 pass attempts for 36 yards … Tavon Cooper leads the offense with 772 yards from scrimmage — 591 on the ground and 181 on receptions … Safety Lorcan Wright reached 100 tackles for the season … Ethan Shank leads with 3 interceptions and Parker Funk has 5 sacks.
The Mustangs: The Mustangs are led by QB Marcus Quaker, RB Trent Herrera and WR Ian Goodling … Goodling caught two long passes from Quaker to give WP the lead last week … Herrera was hurt early in the game … “He got hurt returning the opening kickoff, but we 100% think he’ll play this week,” McCauley said. “Their quarterback is pretty good and they have a fullback around 250 pounds — he’s a load. They run some veer option and run more than pass, so we’ll need to have the defense know their responsibilities.” … West Perry has wins over Mechanicsburg and East Pennsboro, a pair of teams G-A has lost to.
Coach’s viewpoint: “I didn’t like the way we practiced on Tuesday, but today (Wednesday) was the best practice we’ve had all year,” McCauley said. “That made me feel good. We have six road games this year, so it’s good to be home this week. I think the kids are juiced up and ready for a scuffle.”
