ROYERSFORD — The only statistic you really need to know is that Chambersburg’s initial first down of the game came at 6:48 of the third quarter, and the Trojans ended up with a total of three.
That about sums up the 48-0 beating inflicted on Chambersburg by Spring-Ford in a non-league football game Friday night in Royersford.
The District 1 Rams were stifling on defense with a quick, aggressive bunch that totally throttled the Trojans’ offense. And Spring-Ford’s offense eventually wore down a tired Chambersburg defense and also scored 12 points on pick-six interceptions.
A dejected Trojan coach Mark Luther said, “They are good, but … we didn’t play well at all. We didn’t play strong and they were aggressive. We have to go back to work on a lot of things.”
Chambersburg’s defense hung tough for much of the game and allowed only 225 yards. But the Rams consistently had tremendous field position because the Trojans couldn’t move the ball, and eventually, the points came.
Spring-Ford’s first drive was thwarted by an interception by Shea Makosky on a tipped pass from Rams QB Ryan Freed at the Chambersburg 4. The Trojans held on downs at their own 16 on S-F’s next possession. But it was only delaying the inevitable.
Luther said, “The defense gave them fits early on. But we had some third-and-long situations we gave up, and then because our offense couldn’t move the ball and our punting game struggled, we couldn’t get out of our end of the field. The defense had to stay out there way too long.”
Chambersburg also missed on a great opportunity in the game’s first few minutes. Spring-Ford received the kickoff and tried a razzle-dazzle play that included a pass across the field. But Bryce Folmar broke up the play, causing a fumble, and the Trojans recovered at the 15. But an illegal procedure penalty hurt and Teegan Humelsine was wide on a 34-yard field goal try.
“What a way to start the game, but then we couldn’t convert it into points,” Luther said.
The game scoreless after one quarter, but the Rams (2-0) broke through for three scores and a 20-0 halftime lead. Freed ended up completing 19 of 24 passes for 156 yards and four touchdowns. The Trojans did a good job against the run, allowing only 69 yards on 25 attempts, but the field position made it difficult to hold back Spring-Ford.
S-F’s Cole Turner picked off a pass by Jermere Jones in the second quarter and returned it for a touchdown, and Payton West had a pick six for 29 yards off Bryce Folmar in the third period. West intercepted Folmar again on the next series. Jones and Folmar simply did not have time to drop back and pick out a receiver — the Rams’ rush was too strong and too quick.
For the game, Chambersburg managed a total of 21 yards of offense.
“We have to become more aggressive up front or people will just bring pressure all night long,” Luther said.
