Shippensburg grounds out 28-10 win over Blue Devils

GREENCASTLE — Shippensburg did not get many big plays on offense Friday night.

But the Greyhounds did execute a consistent and effective power ground attack that eventually proved a bit too much for Greencastle-Antrim to handle and Ship earned a 28-10 Mid Penn Colonial victory at Kaley Field.

It was the Hounds’ 10th consecutive win over the Blue Devils.

G-A coach Devin McCauley, who watched the game at his home after being quarantined earlier this week because a member of his family tested positive for COVID, said, “We’ve struggled to stop the run, and teams can see that on film. Ship has gotten better every week and they took the ball out of our hands. They shortened the game and pounded the rock.”

Shippensburg, winners of three in a row after starting 0-3, ran 46 times for 249 yards. Nathan Beam, Devin Wilson (2 touchdowns) and Traevon Kater did the bulk of the damage.

The Greyhounds’ opening possession consisted of all runs, going 63 yards, with Wilson scoring from 7 yards out.

Greencastle (1-5, 1-5 MPC) came right back, getting an 11-yard run by Isaiah Toney-Mayhugh and a run from Tevon Cooper for a first down at the Ship 15. But the drive stalled and Nathan Kirkwood kicked a 27-yard field goal.

G-A stopped Shippensburg’s next drive on fourth down, but had to punt, and this time the Hounds went 60 yards for a touchdown, with Anthony Smith barging in from the 1 to make it 14-3 with just 1:10 left before halftime.

The Blue Devils tried to find some points before the break, but unfortunately, quarterback Zach Cole fumbled and Ship’s David Kunkleman recovered on the G-A 34.

A 14-yard run by Isaiah Houser and a pass from Zack Manning to Erby Weller got the Greyhounds close, then with 0:13 left, Manning hit a wide-open Beam from 8 yards out for the score and a 22-3 lead at halftime.

McCauley said, “There are usually a lot of hidden plays in a game that make a difference, but that fumble was an obvious one. It was a tough break and they capitalized.”

In the third quarter, the Greencastle defense put up consecutive three-and-outs vs. Shippensburg. However, the G-A offense also had a pair of series with no first downs.

“I was really happy with how we played in the second half,” McCauley said. “We got a couple of stops, but couldn’t capitalize.”

The Blue Devils finally put together a sustained drive late in the third quarter. Cole hit Adam Root for 17 yards, David Niebauer ran for a first down and Cooper ran 34 yards to put the ball on the 10 — only a saving tackle by Tucker Chamberlain saved a TD. But wo plays later, Niebauer cracked in from 10 yards out and it was 22-10.

Shippensburg came right back, however, and put together an 11-play drive that finished on a 2-yard score from Wilson with 9:00 left. Greencastle fumbled the ball away on its next possession — recovered by Brett Jones — to pretty much ice the game.

McCauley was in a very unique position for a head coach — stuck at home while his team played a game.

“I was watching the game on the TV in my basement just like it was a Penn State game,” McCauley said. “I was yelling at the screen a lot.

“It was a real tough hit on Wednesday morning (when he learned he’d have to be quarantined); maybe the longest day ever. But I had total confidence in the staff and kids to play the game. And that’s what’s important — the kids got to play the game. If you’d told me in August that we’d been able to get six games played, I’d have been very happy.”
