Chambersburg roundup: Trojans battle CV tough in volleyball

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Cumberland Valley 3, Chambersburg 1: The Trojans opened Tuesday night’s Mid Penn Commonwealth game vs. Cumberland Valley with a 25-20 victory at CASHS Field House.

However, the Eagles turned it around and took the next three games, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-23 for a 3-1 victory.

Chambersburg coach Ty Frelin said, “This was a typical match against CV for us and we played at a very high level. We still have things to work on, but we di some really nice things tonight. Kate Etter played a very good all-around match and Sadie Stockslager was huge at the net.”

Etter rolled up 12 service points, 5 aces, 8 kills and 17 digs, while Stockslager  blocked three balls.

Also for the Trojans (2-3, 2-3 MPC), Robyn Stepler put up 12 points, 4 aces, 9 kills, 18 assists and 18 digs; Willa Moats had 12 points, 5 aces and 22 assists; Marlee Wrights had 11 kills and Rachael Meyers had 9, and Courtney Proulx added 15 digs.

Chambersburg 1, Carlisle 0: A goal by Luke Mason midway through the first half was just enough offense to help the Trojans to a Mid Penn Commonwealth win over the Thundering Herd at Trojan Stadium on Tuesday evening.

A shot by a teammate ricocheted off a Carlisle defender and went to Mason, who sharply turned the ball and beat the Herd goalkeeper, who was retreating to his left after going after the first shot. It was Mason’s fifth goal in six games.

Chambersburg is now 4-1-1 (4-1-1 MPC).

Trojan coach COrey Grove said, “We played pretty well for 15-20 minutes — moved the ball nicely and created some good chances. But Carlisle did a good job of pressing our backs and forcing mistakes. They disrupted our rhythm and we found ourselves in a battle. Glad we came out with the win despite not being at our best.

“Luke’s been tremendous for us so far, and is going to be a big part of our success going forward.”
