Greyhounds victorious in home opener

Shippensburg PA– Sometimes, the best offense is a good defense.  Shippensburg, (2-1, 1-0) outscored Boiling Springs 47-19 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters using a stifling defense to upend the Bubblers 68-53 in the Greyhounds home opener Tuesday night.

“One of the keys was to pressure the guards to keep them from getting it to the post,” said winning coach Ray Staver. “I thought we were pretty good at that.”

Good indeed.  The Bubblers held a 17-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter led by 6’10” senior Davin Conley and team leading scorer Trey Martin. But the defense stepped up in the 2nd quarter limiting the Bubblers to only 7 points to take the lead at halftime 32-24. The Greyhounds ended the half on the strength of a corner 3 from Jeremy Thomas and two inside buckets from Collin Taylor.

With 5:31 left in the third quarter, Donley picked up his 4thfoul on a drive by Isaiah Houser, who made both free throws and the lead was at 12.  By the end of the quarter the lead had grown to 23.

Coach Staver was able to give his starters a rest in the 4th quarter and, although outscored 17-9, they were able to close out the Greyhound win.

“Our bench did a really nice job,” said coach Staver.  “Nataniel Edy and Jacob Kramer really gave us quality minutes tonight.”

Taylor led the Greyhounds in scoring with 20, followed by Jayden Statum with 15.  Eight players scored for Shippensburg in a balanced attack.

Conley led all scorers with 22, including 3 from beyond the arc.  He was joined in double figures by Martin with 16.  Only four players scored for Boiling Springs.

The Greyhounds return to action Friday night when they travel to rival Big Spring before returning home next Tuesday to face Waynesboro.
