Forbes Road 5 Hempfield Area 0
Greensburg, Pa. – The Forbes Road Cardinal field hockey team (8-1) topped off a busy 4 game week with two more big wins on the road Saturday afternoon. They kicked off their day of hockey at 1 pm against the Hempfield Area Spartans. The Cardinals who started off the game looking a little tired and playing flat did not get a single one of their five goals in the first half.
A rejuvenated Forbes Road squad emerged from the halftime break to get on the scoreboard 6 minutes into the second half on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Hailey Dodson inserted the ball to Shelby Harnish, who sent a short pass to Emma Gelvin, who dished it right back to Harnish for a launch into the cage past a stunned Spartan defense. Eight minutes later, the same corner play was put into action once again with success. This time the duo of Gelvin and Harnish set up freshman Heidi Strait for her deflection into the cage on right post. A fired up Cardinal team could not be stopped and spent the majority of the remaining time inside the 25 yard line working all angles. Harnish, in a right side maneuver, would score the third goal on a direct flick past the keeper just two minutes later. Shortly thereafter, Madison Hays set up Harlie Strait to put the Cardinals up 4-0. The final strike at goal came with just 15 seconds on the clock. Halfback Payton Kendall sent a beautifully centered ball to the awaiting stick of Hays.
The Spartans, despite earning 3 corners early in the match, were unable to get a single shot at goal. Forbes also took the JV game 3-1. Kayla Baker scored a hat trick.

Forbes Road 3 North Allegheny 0
Greensburg, Pa. – A worn Forbes Road squad returned to Hempfield Area turf again at 4 pm to take on the fresh-legs of the North Allegheny Tigers. (The Cardinal’s only regular season loss last year came at the hands of the Tigers.) The Cardinals made quick work of earning a series of penalty corners. Although they were unable to capitalize on the corners, they eventually would find the cage at the 17:06 minute mark. Emma Gelvin’s free hit pass to Harlie Strait put the Cardinal stickers on the board. Every Tiger attempt at progressing down the field was thwarted by a determined FR defense that returned the ball back to the sticks of their own attack. Halftime score 1-0.
A persistent NA team took an early run at goal at the start of the second half, earning several penalty corners in a row. A more persistent Cardinal squad was determined to hold onto their lead throughout the corner attempts and during some back and forth midfield play down the stretch. A tired FR team found enough steam to add two insurance goals in the final 2 minutes of play. Payton Kendall sent a bullet of a shot right into the cage on a penalty corner ball passed to her from Hailey Dodson. Dodson, whose strategically placed free hit aerial balls were key in progressing the Cardinals downfield all day, scored the last goal of the day on a penalty corner ball sent to her from Shelby Harnish. Final score 3-0.

Forbes Road Coach Mindy Horne commented, “This is an awesome group of girls, who took their game to the next level today. North Allegheny was our only regular season loss last year and the girls were really motivated to come home with a win. I am so proud of this team.” The Cardinals will celebrate Senior Night, when they host Huntingdon Tuesday at 4 pm.
