The James Buchanan Lady Rocket volleyball team continued its early season success by winning the 30th annual McConnellsburg Tournament on Saturday.
The Lady Rockets defeated Bedford 2-0 in the championship by game scores of 26-24 and 25-6.
It was the first-time ever JB has won the tournament.
“I thought the girls really came together as a team,” JB coach Erica Piper said. “We had a few moments in the first set against Bedford in the championship where it could have gotten away from us be we stayed together”
In the championship, JB trailed 24-23 in the first game, but ran off 3 straight points to win. In the second game, the Lady Rockets led 4-3 and then Rylynn Welsh scored 15 straight service points to put the game and match away.
“Rylynn did an awesome job giving us some breathing room in that second game,” Piper said. “It was neat to see the girls win and celebrate together.”
In pool play the Lady Rockets beat McConnellsburg (25-12), Shippensburg (25-20, 25-18) and St. James (25-21, 25-22). JB split with Bedford (24-26, 27-26).
JB’s Carly Sollenberger was named tournament MVP. Stat leaders for the Lady Rockets were: Kills – Welsh 22, Campbelle Dayley 18; Digs – Dayley 40, Welsh 37; Assists – Sollenberger 71; Service points – Welsh 45, Lydia Jones 28, Dayley 24.
“Overall, our passing continues to improve and the girls are giving themselves a change to run a strong offense,” Piper said. “From Tuesday (loss to Trinity) to today we’ve gotten better each day and that’s all I can ask at this point of the season. I was proud of the girls.”
