Chambersburg 37, Mifflin County 28: The Trojans picked up a huge Mid Penn Commonwealth victory on the road over the Huskies (9-2, 3-2 MPC) on Tuesday night, setting them up for a showdown at Cumberland Valley next Thursday.
The winner of Chambersburg (12-1, 4-1 MPC) vs. CV (9-3, 3-1) will likely be the division co-champion with Central Dauphin.
“This one scared me,” Trojan coach Matt Mentzer said, “because they are a good team, well-coached, and were flying high, and we had to go two hours to get there. We ended up having some good, quality wrestling on both sides.”
Chambersburg put the match away from 182 to 220, when Luke Nichter scored a pin in 1:48, Guy Lozius notched five takedowns in a 10-6 decision and Wyatt Hull scored a pin in 3:07. That made the score 37-16 with just two bouts left.
“Guy has been hitting his stride lately,” Mentzer said. “He wore his guy out on his feet. Wyatt was a big favorite at 220 and he came through. He took his kid down to his back and finished the pin.”
Mentzer also felt that saving some team points early made a big difference. At 120, Anthony Colangelo lost by major decision to returning state placewinner Christian Fisher, Kelby Mixell was a big underdog at 132, but lost only 9-7 in overtime, and Carson Mello moved up a weight and held Brycen Hassinger, who is ranked in the state, to a 4-2 decision.
“Colangelo saved us some points, Mixell hit a four-point move with five seconds left to send it to overtime, and Mello got a late takedown to put himself in position to win,” Mentzer said.
Also for Chambersburg, Cole Grove won by decision at 126, as did Spencer Runshaw at 138, Tate Nichter notched a pin in 52 seconds at 145 and Seth Runshaw won by major at 152.
Mentzer said, “I had 126, 138, 170, 195 and 220 as the five key bouts. I felt we needed to win three of them, and we won four — that was the difference.”
