CHAMBERSBURG — Depending on your perspective, you could say everything went right for Chambersburg.
Or you could say everything went wrong for Carlisle.
Either way you look it, the Trojans made it look way easier than anybody expected Thursday night in a Mid Penn Commonwealth wrestling match at the CASHS Auxiliary Gym, rolling to a surprising 53-15 victory over the Thundering Herd.
“I didn’t see that coming,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “We thought there were six matches that could flip-flop either way. The odds of getting all of them to fall our way were pretty low, but that’s what we did.”
Carlisle coach Joe Wilson said, “They have a great team and we just didn’t match up well with them.”
It didn’t help the Herd (1-2, 0-2 MPC) that one of their hammers, Colton Jumper, was out sick. Or that Rafael Portillo, another ace, was battling back spasms and was less than 100%. Or that Chambersburg won the coin flip.
That allowed Mentzer to dictate some of the matchups and his team came through every time.
It started at 220 pounds, when Guy Lozius used five takedowns to handle Dylan White, 10-5.
At 285, the Herd’s Osvaldo Alvarez got the first takedown and looked sharp, but Wyatt Hull flipped him for a reverse and nearfall and led 6-2 in the second period when he took Alvarez to his back again for a pin and a 9-0 lead.
“When we got both of those wins, I was able to breathe a little easier,” Mentzer said. “Hull gained confidence after he hit that first move.”
Wilson said, “Alvarez was doing all the work in that match, but when he got pinned, that started the avalanche.”
Hull, who had lost 7-3 to Alvarez last year, said, “My instructions were to use a lot of snaps to set up my shots. I learned a lot from last year’s match. When I saw where we were starting, I knew my match would be a big one, because we expected a close one.”
It was a close one through 132, but the Trojans ripped off wins in the final seven bouts to balloon their lead.
Carlisle’s Noah Clawson won by technical fall, Clayton Shughart by forfeit and Portillo by major; in between, Chambersburg had a decision by Anthony Colangelo and a pin by Cole Grove at 126. That left Chambersburg with an 18-15 lead.
From that point on, the Trojans scored pins by Ryder Davenport at 145, Seth Runshaw at 160 (in 21 seconds) and Zae Kirk at 170, majors by Spencer Runshaw at 138 (15-1) and Luke Nichter at 195 (17-4) and a forfeit to Carson Mello at 182.
Wilson said, “I thought we had a good shot to win at 145, and at 170, we were ahead 9-1 when we got pinned. I would have liked to match up Rafael and Grove, but not with his back like it was.”
The other Trojan win came in the night’s best bout, at 152. Tate Nichter, ranked No. 17 in the state, scored a 3-2 win over No. 8 Colton Zimmerman.
The difference was the first 10 seconds of the match, when Nichter shot straight off the whistle and earned a takedown, allowing him to dictate the match.
Mentzer said, “The kids competed hard, even the ones who had tough matchups.”
