CHAMBERSBURG — Greencastle-Antrim put up a defensive puzzle that Chambersburg was never able to solve.
That defense enabled the Blue Devils to claim the girls championship of the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday evening at CASHS Field House with a 26-22 victory over the host Trojans.
In the third-place game, James Buchanan defeated Waynesboro, 40-26.
Greencastle played a sagging 3-2 zone that allowed Chambersburg almost zero chances inside the paint. And the Trojans could not hit enough shots from outside to bring the Devils out of it.
“They packed it in and let us shoot it,” Trojan coach Barry Purvis said. “We couldn’t get the ball inside and our shooting percentage was just bad.”
Chambersburg made only 8 of 41 shots (19.5%).
The other thing the zone did was enable G-A to control the defensive boards.
Purvis said, “We got one shot only. With five people in the paint, they were always in position to get the ball. They were banking on us missing the shots and them getting the rebounds and that’s what happened.”
Greencastle trailed only once in the game, at 2-1. But it never put Chambersburg away until the very end.
Lydia Crist made two straight baskets to give G-A an 18-13 lead in the third quarter. The Trojans cut it to 21-19 on a layup by Marlee Wrights after three periods.
But Chambersburg scored only three points in the fourth quarter and Greencastle was able to bleed the clock. A pair of free throws by Sayge Wilhide with 19 seconds made it 26-20 and closed the door.
Crist tallied 9 points to lead the Devils, while Madison Sweitzer and Wilhide had 8 each.
For Chambersburg, which played without injured point guard Robyn Stepler, Bre’ya Clopper scored 9 points and Erin Pattillo had 5.
Purvis said, “Without Robyn, it makes a difference. Some kids don’t have the confidence to take over that leadership role with scoring. Other kids will have to step up — that’s sports.”
Notes: Greencastle and Chambersburg each made 8 field goals, but the Devils scored 8 points at the foul line and the Trojans just 4 … Turnovers were kept to a minimum — Chambersburg had only 7 and G-A 11 … Crist was named the tourney MVP, and the All-Tournament team included Sweitzer of G-A, Ashley Adams and Stepler of Chambersburg, Cass Martin of JB and Tatianna Badger of Waynesboro.
