Defense leads Waynesboro over Trojans for Tip-Off boys crown

CHAMBERSBURG — Waynesboro and Chambersburg both played a sticky man-to-man defense during Saturday night’s boys championship game of the Franklin County Tip-Off Tournament.

The difference was that the Indians’ trapping press threw the Trojans off their game, and better yet, Boro played tough defense without racking up many fouls.

The result was that Waynesboro outscored Chambersburg 15-0 at the free throw line and pulled off a 42-39 victory at CASHS Field House.

Greencastle won 37-34 over James Buchanan to take third place.

“We’ll play man-to-man for the full 90 feet,” Indian coach Tom Hoffman said, “but sometimes we’re not as good in the last 45. Tonight, we guarded them well in the half-court without fouling.

“We were really active, and we even helped the helpers. I saw some really good stuff.”

The press created a lot of double teams, and while the Trojans had only 15 turnovers, they always seemed to be out of synch on offense.

Assistant coach Dennis Chamberlin (head coach Shawn Shreffler was out sick) said, “They played defense with a lot of intensity and we didn’t respond quickly enough. We didn’t do a good job of going from full-court to half-court and getting the ball to our bigs.”

After a see-saw first quarter — Boro scored the first six points, the Trojans had nine in a row and Waynesboro finished with eight straight to lead 14-9 — the Indians never trailed.

In fact, they nudged the lead to a 11 points (36-25), thanks to nine consecutive points by Jay Alvarez,  with about two minutes left in the third quarter.

But Henry Shearer drained a pair of threes, Seth Brouse scored on a fast break and Ty Holsopple drove for a bucket to bring Chambersburg within one.

Points were hard to come by down the stretch. Alvarez hit two free throws to put his team up 40-37 with 2:58 left, and after a Trojan miss, Waynesboro moved the ball well to take a lot of time off the clock.

Holsopple’s layup with 1:08 left made it a one-point game again, but the Trojans fouled Cole Rhyne with 0:18 left and he made both. They set Brouse up for a potential tying 3-pointer, but it rattled out.

Chamberlin said, “Tonight was a learning situation for us, and we’ll improve with time.”

“Look, we know the captain of their ship (Shreffler) wasn’t here tonight, and they’re also a little banged up,” Hoffman said. “But (laughing), we don’t care. We’ll take it.”

Notes: The Trojans took just one free throw, and missed it; Boro was 15-for-21 … Alvarez, the tournament MVP, had 14 points and Rhyne had 11 … For Chambersburg, Holsopple scored 12 and Shearer had 9 … The All-Tournament team included Rhyne, Holsopple, Brouse, JB’s Caden Stoner and G-A’s Jason Freeman.
