Trojan wrestlers roll to dual tourney victory

Carson Mello won 4-2 in sudden victory at 170 pounds for Chambersburg.

CHAMBERSBURG — Chambersburg got victories where expected and saved points in other places, and earned a 38-20 victory over New Oxford to win the Chambersburg Duals wrestling tournament on Saturday at the CASHS Auxiliary Gym.

The Trojans walloped Big Spring 63-12 in its first match of the day.

The Colonials finished second, Conestoga Valley third, Big Spring fourth, Lancaster Catholic fifth and Greencastle-Antrim sixth in the event.

“What I thought we have with this team, we have,” Chambersburg coach Matt Mentzer said. “It’s like playing poker when you have a good hand. We beat a quality team today.”

Tate Nichter (152), Luke Nichter (182), Wyatt Hull (285) and Tyler Smith (113) scored pins and Seth Runshaw (160) had a quick technical fall. Scoring decisions were Cole Grove (132), Spencer Runshaw (145) and Carson Mello (170).

Mentzer said, “We tried to make it our best lineup and to do that, we bumped five guys up, and four of them won.”

Mello’s match vs. Luke Lardarello had the most drama. Neither wrestler could get a takedown and it went to the second overtime tied 1-1. Lardarello scored an escape in that frame that was nearly a reversal at the mat’s edge.

But Mello tied it with an escape with just eight seconds left in the next period. In sudden victory, Mello was down and used a roll and switch to spin behind for the winning reversal.

“He beat one of New Oxford’s solid kids, so that was a good one,” Mentzer said.

Spencer Runshaw eked out a 2-1 win over Brennan Romanoff, with the deciding point a penalty for stalling in the second period.

The Colonials still had a chance, down 26-11 with five bouts left, but Joey Fuller held Dylan Smith to a 7-1 decision at 220, Hull notched his pin at 285 and April Rump lost only 8-2 to NO’s Dakota Brady at 106.

Mentzer said, “Rump and Fuller saved us six points, and that essentially clinched the meet for us. They both wrestled smart and kept us out of danger.”
